My exhaust plans, what do you think?

Replace the original Y with a magna flow Y - 2.5" into 3" outlet.

Then go into a 2 chamber IMCO Extreme SI DO 3" into dual 2.5" outlets.

Run out in front of the passenger's side back tire at an angle.

Still looking at what tip options I can use on the DO muffler, that will look good coming out at an angle.

If you have suggestions or opinions, let em fly boys.

Thanks,

Darren Kelly

Only thing I question is the exhaust coming out infront of the tire. You will get stuff all over your tire and also. I would go behind the tire.

DK,
I added the Y, & used a Magnaflow 18" polished 3" SIDO 2.5". I ran the pipes out to match the factory behind the wheels. I used Magnaflow 3" 15 deg, SS tips. I have received a lot of complements & ques. about the system. Good deep sound, a touch too loud sometimes, but overall I like it.
Good Luck

Do you have any pics of your tips? Does both pipes come out the same side? Or do you have 1 run out each side? Thanks.

That looks sweet! Do you have a tip on each side (duals)?

the gas tank is in the way on the other side, it would be a pita to relocate it and there isnt any room to run the pipes without running it were people could see or getting in the way of other things

All I'm wondering now is if my exhaust outlet is 2.5" does my exhaust tips need to be 2.5" also? Dumb question I know, but I'm having trouble finding tips with a 2.5" inlet.

Sounds like a nice set up!

The stock Y is a real cork, so replacing that is a good idea. One thing to consider, since you want to run duals out of the muffler, is to cut off the Y, then run dual 2.5" pipes into a dual 2.5" in / dual 2.5" out Magnaflow muffler. If you do that I would go with the biggest body they have (24" long I thing), otherwise it will be pretty loud.

If you are looking for maxiumum pulling torque, I would do what you are doing, but go with a single 3" pipe out of the muffler, but that's only if your pulling something all the time.

As far as the tips go, if you exhaust pipe is 2.5", 2.5" inlet tips will look far better since they will match up nicely and have a good weld. I recommend 2.5" inlet / 3" outlet. The bigger you go on the tip, the more noise and resionation. Believe it or not, rolled tipx really help elminate the possiblity of any resonation (reverberation in the cab that results in headaches).

Good Luck!

I agree. Ford ran the exhaust like that back in '97 and they had a recall on it because after a while it turned the wheels blue.
Dont quote me on this, but I think the exhaust gasses reacted with the aluminum wheels and caused them to turn blue.
If you want to run it out the side, Id have the exhaust exit to the side just back of the cab. Thats true sidepipes!

will that kill your low end though? that's pretty open compared to stock right?

what if you go 2.5 Dual in to a 2.5 single out?

I do not have pics yet, but the muffler guy expanded the 2.5 pipe to fit the 3" tip. The tips do not have the rolled end like those shown. They are 10" long, 15 degree slash cut Magnaflow. They exit both sides. He matched the exit location & angles of the factory exhaust & put one on each side.
later

Another Idea

I thought about a solution like that.

A couple of variations on the theme come to mind.

First, if you're going to go SIDO, why not just get one of the aftermarket catback systems and adapt it with the magnaflow Y. That way you have the option of going out the back without a lot of custom bending.

My second idea is what I am considering. I am going to price it out and post my idea for feedback in a few days. The idea is to go with DIDO... custom true duals. Cut the factory exhaust off just aft the last set of cats and build from there. Use two 90 deg. stainless 2 1/2" pipes to bring the driver side exhaust over to the passenger side and get it lined. Use straight 2 1/2 inch stainless to run both exhausts back right next to each other into a DIDO exhaust. Exit the DIDO with 45 deg. 2 1/2"'s right in front of the passenger side rear tire. I'm thinking about using stainless band clamps to join all of the parts. It'll be a bit more expensive than welding, but much easier and will allow for easier modifications and replacements in the future. I think the only custom bend in this setup will be the pipe going from the passenger side cat to the inlet on the DIDO. I haven't spent enough time under my truck to be sure yet, but I believe the passenger side pipe going into the factory Y is aimed down slightly.

The down side of this vs a SIDO, is that it precludes using one of the catback systems as the back portion of the system since they are all SIDO.

Enjoy.

the age ol' question

what kinda power gains can you expect from a system setup like this? I mean is a 3'' pipe really worth it behind 4 cats? just curious. My exhaust is decently loud right now but all i got is a flowmaster in the place of the old muffler and thats it....when i had the muffler installed the shop had a pipe ran just before the axle with a turn down and was really quiet, i took that off and sounded a lot better.
I want to run it out the back, replacing the flowmaster with an IMCO 3'', Y pipe and 3'' pipes out the back.....I want a little more power than 230 HP and I also want a good strong sound, my goal is 260hp. I'll consider a chip and a intake later.
