Question Exhaust System or Just a Muffler?

Ok so I want to get an exhaust on my truck like yesterday. My question is should I spend the money on a cat back system, or just get a muffler and install it. I can do the welding if needed...

After reading and reading here and elsewhere, I am going to get a magnaflow exhaust. I dont really want much noise from it but I want to know its a V8 in there. Ive got a 90 LX with dual flowmasters and I LOVE the way it sounds, but I dont need the volume or the resonation at low RPMs in my daily driver.

I want to get some more power, and I will be buying a TP Xcal soon, and will also be trying to pick out an intake. A friend just got an MAC Performance intake for his 99 GMC and I did like the chrome. Any suggestions on intakes?

Thanks guys; I bought my 05 not 6 months ago and I have learned SO much from you all.

I would just weld a Magnaflow muffler into your stock pipes. It will make all the difference that the catback would. Until you SERIOUSLY modify your engine you will not gain anything from the mandrel bent pipes. There, I just saved you 300+ dollars!

LOL. Yeah ok you have a pretty good point. I spent a lot of time working on musclecars and I guess I asked the question because I think the same thing, and it seems like everyone is buying an exhaust system. I was starting to wonder what the heck was so different in that piece of pipe.

Anyone wanna tell me otherwise, or should I do as fourpointsix says and save my $300. Also, what is the diameter of the exhaust tubing, so I can shop ebay for my new magnaflow.

If your thinking about adding an Intake along with the new muffler or catback, you should also add the Xcal 2. If you do that, you would want to go with the catback system and have the tune designed with the intake and exhaust in mind.
If you do not do the Xcal2, then just adding the muffler would be fine. I had the magnaflow 14" muffler on my 05' and it resonnated too much. If you do add the magnaflow, make sure you get the 18". I believe that is the size of the muffler in the catback system for our trucks. I just added the Borla dual rear exit and it rocks.
I am using the Air Force 1 CAI, with the xcal2 tune, and it makes a noticable difference.
Good Luck

Yes, I am planning to order the Xcal for sure. Thats the thing... Is it really going to be different. I mean, why? What is different enough to warrant me spending another $300? I mean, I want to believe it. I just have not been convinced.

What size is the factory exhaust? Also, which magnaflow should I go with? I am looking at their web site and there sure are a lot. I want to get the stainless series, but thats all I know!

OK! Thanks for that tip, I went to Magnflow's website and they give the specs of the mufflers included with their systems.

I just bought from eBay (performance-curve is the seller) a Magnaflow SS 5x8x18 muffler and a 12" SS 3.5" tip for a total of $117.37 shipped. Ill let you guys know how it works out. I did notice the tip I bought was a 3" inlet, and the exhast is just over 2.5" O.D. I'm assuming I can make this work, its not THAT big of a deal, is it?

Thanks again guys!

Any good muffler shop can get it done for you. I would try and find a shop that has lots of experience in custom exhaust work. I may be wrong for saying this, but I have gotten better work at custom shops than the Midas shops.
I just put the Magnaflow 5x8x18 on my S'Crew, you will love it.

I had a stainless Magnaflow muffler put on my truck today at an exhaust shop. I am going to take it off--it is just too quiet for my taste. The sound is very good, deep and bassy, but there just isn't enough of it for me. I'll sell it to ya....

The 'body' of the muffler measures 14"

Really? I actually already bought a 18" one today. Thanks though. I bought a magnaflow tip as well... I was at my friends house and he had a similar size tip sitting around and he started holding it up to my truck in front of the rear wheel, behind the door. It looked pretty sweet, and everyone thought it looked "tougher" then behind the tire...

What do you guys think? Will it be too loud in the cab there?
Do any of you have it like this and have a photo or thoughts? Thanks!

I can't imagine it will be too loud the way you route it. I have mine dumped directly after the muffler, and it is still way too quiet for me. You said you didn't want it too loud, just a little rumbly, right? Should be just right.

Talking

Just get the muffler and keep the stock pipes. Then get some exhaust tips and put them on the stock pipes if you want to.

Yeah I think thats what Im going to do. I wouldnt want to cut that thing off and then wish I hadnt.

I screwed up and I ordered the wrong tip, so now I have a 3.5" tip with a 3" inlet made by magnaflow if anyone is interested in it. I got the same one only with a rolled edge because I prefer that. At least now I can hold them both up and compare.

Thanks guys.
