simple exhaust question......
simple exhaust question......
ive been reading all the posts on the magnaflow and flowmaster mufflers and systems. i have a brand new 05 with only 6k miles on it. i really want some sound out of the tail pipe, but am not quite ready to spend big bucks on a full exhaust system........so, would i be doing an injustice or any harm to my truck if i simply replaced the stock muffler with either a magnaflow or flowmaster ?
obviously this would not sound as good as a good dual exhaust, but would it get me some sound tones out the back ?
im not looking to be the loudest, just sound pretty good at an inexpensive price.....for now

Simple answer..... Yes.
IMO, adding either aftermarket muffler will be fine. Won't 'harm' anything and it will give you the sound you are looking for even from a 'single' exhaust system....

This is the flowmaster original 40 series on their site

I wouldn't buy it direct, get it at pep boys or a local shop and you can get it for less than $100
Also, I don't know the diameter of your pipe, I am assuming 2.5". Its rather irrelevant though, as anything within 1/2 inch will work if your welder is good enough

Go to ebay motors. Put in Flowmaster.
You will find one guy there that sells for the lowest price I have seen; he will have a lot of listings. You want the Super 40, same low growl with less resonation at highway speed.
I am not sure which diameter you have but mine was a 2 1/2 inch.
Also, crawl under and look at the muffler you have now and see if it has an off-set input and/or output. In otherwards is the pipe going in the center or offset to one side, same with the pipe coming out. You order the same offset when you order the muffler from ebay.
You will need an extension pipe the same size (2 ½ inch) since the Flowmaster will be shorter then the original muffler.
Try to make sure the Flowmaster is installed with the beginning of the muffler at the same spot as the beginning of the original muffler. In otherwards put the extension towards the rear of the truck. That way you will match the "pulse phasing" and maintain the factory scavenging so that you don't loose torque. Others call this back pressure but it is actually a sort of timing and is determined by the length of the undisturbed pipe prior to the muffler (on Magnaflow it has to be measured to the end of the tail pipe since they are a strait through muffler, this makes it more complicated)
I think that is enough information for you to digest. Good luck and always have fun.

It sounds to me like you are gonna wish you just went with a full system after all that work, with the welding and all. I was looking into the same kind of thing, but I found I complete Gibson cat-back system for $269 on eBay. You really can't beat it for that price, and it took about 2 hours for removal and install, and the sound is exactly what I wanted, and keeps getting better as the truck breaks in (I only had 700 miles on it when replaced, just rolled 2700). Thats just my opinion, but look around for a good deal before you start digging out the welder.
