Question Effect of exhaust tips on sound

First off let me say that I've done an extensive search on this and only found 2 or 3 posts that even mention this. That said, what effect do the diameter and length of tips have on the sound of your exhaust? Obviously the muffler makes most of the difference.

One post said tips made no difference at all. Another said the larger the diameter and the longer the deeper the sound. Short and narrow tips make the sound more raspy. A bit contradictory.

Is there any truth to any of this?!?!

Yes, I have an 04 with the 5.4, I just replaced the factory with a magnaflow and later put on a 4" magnaflow tip, definitely changed the sound, its deeper and louder....
