Side Exhaust

There is a guy that lives here in my hometown that has side exhaust on his
f-150, however, it doesn't have a deep sound like I would expect and to be honest it's really quite. My question is can side exhaust even be run on these trucks? If not is this guys most likely just cosmetic? I think it looks awesome but could there possibly be any performance gains? I guess if I don't get an answer here that is sufficient I'll just have to wait until I see the truck at Wally world and just kinda' snoop around and look. Hopefully the big burly gangster that drives it won't come out and pop a cap in my a$$.

I have dual exit bent at a 90 degree angle one at each side and it sounds loud it could be the type of exhaust he has.I dout it makes a difference in hp gains it just changes the sound a little.
