No muffler hurt perfomance??

I just went to a few exhaust shops and talked about geting my 05 lariat straight piped(5.4). I asked them if they recomend using flowmaster or whatever and they said 99 percent of guys just go with out a muffler. Simply cut the muffler off and put a Y in the pipe and exit it out the back. Is there anything wrong with doing this? As far as performance? And how will it sound?

i dont think so, it might drop ur low end torque but hey if u need all that power get it tuned. if ur looking for a nice sound get a str8 pipe, the flow master is loud and sounds nice but it proly does the same thing as str8 pipes

ive heard it may drop low end torque but id like to know why? Less back pressure or what? The cats would give you the back pressure id think.

New aged engines require that backflow to run right! Anything pretty much 96 and newer (OBD II) doesn't take well to str8 pipes, although it has been very successfully done.

I think you would be alright. However, I would just cut the muffler off and weld in a pipe to replace it. The reason I say this is because if you have new dual pipes run out the back, they will probably be custom made with a compression bender and won't flow as well as the OEM tailpipe.

I have an 04 f150 with no muffler, it hhas the 5.4l and it kicks as* ! it's loud all around town and has a real deep sound [still not loud enough for me though] i didn't lose torque or power and it is def worth getting the muffler removed !

Other than it's illegal? If the right cop finds you the ticket will cost some $$$. I was talking to a guy the other day that got $150 ticket for his car being too loud.

Cutting off your muffler isn't illegal. It's according where you live and/or where you drive. Some cities have a sound ordinance. Open headers are illegal. If you drive somewhere with a SO just do what the Eagles do and "Take It Easy"
If your city has EPA requirements you might want to check that out but since the shop guys are saying do it, there's probably not a law against it or they couldn't do it.

If your state has 'vehicle inspections' forget about cutting off the catalytic converter - you'll just be putting one back one. I don't know the specifics, but it is illegal to cut off the catlytic converter, just like it is illegal to use leaded gas on highways, and red dye fuel.

It's just that noone really cares about it.

Whoa the cats are staying....Just the muffler is getting taken off. When our cops have their trucks done the same i think its ok haha. Just a small town and a lot of guys have the same thing done so im not worried about that...I really wish i could hear what one sounds like before i do it.

i have an electronic exhaust cut out, which just means when i flip a switch its straight from the cats. It sounds awesome, there is a performance increase you feel from the get go, off the line i mean, i can actually chirp the tires barely. it really starts to sound good when you womp on it, and get the rpms up, but for the most part, i promise you will be happy

i have a 99 with the 5.4 and i just had pacesetter headers installed the other day which gave the truck a decent power boost, but almost no difference in sound which i thought was strange. so i started off by installing a dynomax super turbo muffler to get that sound i was looking for. it sounded ok but not loud or nearly as deep as i wanted so i took the truck for a spin without any muffler at all and it sounded good but definetly lost a lot of low end torque. so i went back to the store and got a good old thrush cherry bomb 28" muffler and rerouted the exhaust out the side in front of the back wheel and now it sounds great and has the low end power back, if not more now and defenetly has a lot more power throughout the whole rpm range.

IT's gonna sound loud. Maybe too loud. Not good if you don't want to attract attention. If you live in a small town it should be no biggie other than more pollution. They are very strict in some cities and counties as well as decibel levels of noise. But WHEN IN ROME; DO AS THE ROMANS.

I Put A Flowmaster Duel Cat Back On With The 70 Series Muffler And The Power Gain Wasn't Much To Speek About, Sounds Great Though, Had The 40 Series And It Was Much To Loud. I Did Lose About 2-3 Mpg So Beware These New 5.4 3v Need The Back Pressure To Run Eficiently. Flowmaster Said This Was Typical Of These Trucks And The Dual Cat Backs Were More Show And Sound Than Performance And Mpg Gains
