This is what I'm wanting to do...IMCO

I have an 01 F150 w/ 4.6. I have stock exhaust. I noticed that it's mainly bolted together, which gave me an idea. (I like to save money just like the next guy). Anyway, I'm thinking about just buying one of these IMCO Extreme 1 chamber's (SI/DO) ($32.99) and dumping it a foot or so behind the muffler. I want tailpipes & tips eventually, but don't have the funds to do the whole thing right now. But I want to get rid of this stock muffler. I'm thinking I can un-clamp my factory muffler and tailpipe and just clamp on the IMCO with the dumps. I've done a LOT of reading and searching on here about exhaust related subjects, but haven't come across anyone yet who has done it like this with this muffler, and with the 4.6. What do you think?

With "unclamp" do you mean the exhaust flange? There would be 3 bolst going around the exhaust pipe. I have a 4.2L and would like to eventually replace my muffler with a SI/DO like you, and have the exhaust in fron of the rear right tire(dont care about a dirty rim). I was going to just buy the muffler and exhaust pipe, remove my exhaust from the cats and back and cut of the old muffler, and weld up the new one. I have to keep in mind not everyone owns a MIG welder

I'll try to describe what mine looks like. It has the 2 pipes coming down from the engine w/ 2 cats on each. Then the drivers side pipe crosses over behind the tranny and "y"s into the passenger side pipe into one pipe. After about a foot or so, there is a straight pipe, I guess about 2 ft. long, that's claped on. Then that pipe is clamped onto the stock muffler. Then out of the muffler comes the tailpipe and so on and so forth. What I want to do is unclamp where that straight pipe goes into the front of the muffler and remove the muffler and tailpipe completely. Then clamp on the IMCO in place of where the stock muffler was and just put some dump pipes off of it. Does that make sense?

It makes sense. That's exactly what I did with mine (2000 5.4), only with Flowmaster 40 series SI/DO. Welded everything in and eliminated the clamps. Sounds awesome.

I'm pumped about it! I ordered my IMCO Extreme 1 chamber SI/DO yesterday. Total price w/ shipping was $44! Hope mine sounds awesome too! It's waaaaaay too quiet w/ the stock exhaust.

Stupid school!

If i wasnt in college right now I'd be able to afford that $44 or similar. Priorities sucks...haahaa. I'll be doing my exhaust as soon as possible(maybe in a month or so)...

Let us know how it sounds!

$$ is the reason, or lack of it, that I'm wanting to try this myself instead of getting a full catback or going to a muffler shop. I figured this would be an inexpensive way for me to try it out and see if I can get a better sound than stock without breaking my budget. Ordered it yesterday so hopefully, I'll get it sometime next week. I'll definitely post my results on here.

Where did you buy the IMCO extreme from? I have been looking and cant find anything. I looked at performance-curve and I guess they dont have them anymore.

If the muffler pipe slides into the headpipe, then you may need to heat up the pipe to get the muffler out. If the muffler slides over the headpipe, then use a die grinder to cut just through the muffler pipe on two sides oppisite of each other, then pry it apart and slide muffler off.
