Y pipe?

After posting about using an H or X pipe and duals, I found some older posts that recommended using a Single pipe instead of duals with a stock vehicle. Will an aftermarket Y pipe like a Magnaflow or Flowmaster help that much? And if so, do I need to get a 2.5" to 2.5" or a 2.5" to 3.0"? Thanks.

Hi. If your factory 'Y' is like most of 'em, it is really a 1.5" hole - not the best for flow.

They help free up some power - just a few HP, but these things are only $35 - the labour to install is more.

If you have the factory exhaust - you need 2.5 in/2.5 out.
If you want to add a 3" intermediate pipe/muffler, you'd need 2.5in/3.0 out.

92f150loudest,

Go down 4 threads to Exhaust Question (Magnaflow). You don't really need to change the Y pipe at all. If the installer know what he is doing he can make yours work. Read the entire thread, I hope it helps you out.

Sorry Chas - but you are wrong.

You've got a 2005 - that factory 'Y' is not compromised as the older model 'Y's are. Those older ones are constructed totally different; where the crossover pipe from the left cat gets 'grafted' into the right piece - therr is a BIG bottleneck ( actual diameter is around 1.6") and can't be retrofitted as yours was, no matter how far you try to cut it back. It needs to go. For $35, why **** around?

The link I referred to states the years in question.

Nice fabrication on yours, though.

Cheers

Sorry Vic,

I didn't mean to give anybody a bum steer. I had a 97 f150 that I had true duals installed on. They cut the Y out and ran seperate pipes all the way through. I never paid any attention to the Y since it was no longer needed. However, it is nice to now that Ford is making some improvements in these newer trucks.

As for saving $35.00, I will always **** around if I can save some money somewhere (I've got more time then money anyhow). I could use that money to by a couple gallons of gas... I do stand corrected, thanks for setting me straight..
