new guy with a 94 and questions

Hey everybody:

I am the original owner of a very well maintained 94 F-150 with trailer tow pkg. and a 5.0/302 that I want to open up to breathe better so I can tow a 5,000# camper. I plan to update whatever I can for no more than $2500.00 including labor, and stay with bolt-on stuff only. I plan on going with K&N for the air, and I don't know yet on the chip and ignition upgrades. I'm more interested in performance than anything else but I'm having trouble finding parts for a 94. Which manufacturers have the best reputations for performance and durability when it comes to exhaust systems? Since I want to increase towing ability I guess I need torque increases more than HP. Right now I'm considering a cat back and headers and y crossover I just need some one to point me in the right direction. The more I read the more confused I get.

From what I've read here on this forum, Magnaflow appears to outweigh Flowmaster.

I've heard that many people noticed a drop in low end torque installing Flowmaster, but with Magnaflow the low end didn't seem to be affected that much. What I've SEEN is that it doesn't really matter and this is more "case based."

Besides installing an entirely different differential, pipes, superchargers, chips, and air filters are just about all you can do. Beware though: chips can eat your gas mileage, and can require you put the good stuff (91 Octane plus) in your truck.

If you know what you're doing and decide to do it yourself, I've heard that installing a 4.10 or above differential shouldn't be that expensive. I haven't messed with mine because I'm trying to CONSERVE on gas, but you do what you've gotta do if you're hauling a 5,000# trailer.

Our new 05 Explorer has a 4.0 V6 and is rated to pull 5,300 lbs with a 3.55 differential. The 4.6 V8 can tow 7,100 at 3.73 (I think). You may not really even need to do much more than air filter unless you notice a lot of the trailer "pulling back" on you.

Thanks thereisnospoon. I couldn't find a model from Magnaflow for my year but I'll keep trying. With the Trl Tow Pkg. I have I can tow 7,000#, (I have a 373 rear end). This truck is old but it's only got about 63,000 on it and not a scratch or dent anywhere and it runs like a striped *** ape! All OEM except tires, shocks and battery. All I need it for is to pull the trailer 50/100 miles a 10/12 times a year to camp. I just need to find the best pipes around for it.
