Ditching the si/do setup for a si/so

I've been thinking about using my stock exhaust I have laying around to fabricate a si/so exhaust with a performance muffler. I've cut the tail pipe off after the muffler on the stock exhaust. It's in fairly good shape since I only put about 5000 miles on it.

I'm very seriously thinking about letting an exhaust shop take off my si/do flowmaster set-up, and install a si/so Magnaflow muffler, and re-use the stock tail pipe.

All they would have to do is put a head pipe on it, and maybe a little pipe after the muffler to make up for the void space where the stocker used to be since it is longer than most mufflers.

I want to feel that low-end torque I lost when I changed over to the si/do setup. My question is, what kind of magnaflow would you guys suggest I use for a si/so system? Thanks for any help guys.

Scratch that idea. They cut the frikkin' hangers off when they cut my stock exhaust off. Damnit. I want a Gibson 3" Single exhaust. Maybe that'll quieten it down a little as to were it doesn't sound like a 65 hp johnson outboard. lol.

Go with a Magnaflow 3 inch. It sounds good on a V6. I put it on my girlfriend's 2002 F150 with the V6 and she has a lot more power now.

You mean they cut the hangers off the TRUCK or the PIPE? If you mean the pipe, no sweat... Any Exhaust shop can weld new hangers on the pipe. If you mean the truck, that's FOCKED UP.

Hey peacemaker, if you live near LA gibson is giving away a free non-stainless exhaust to certain make and model trucks. Check out their site.

Did the exact same thing on my truck. Put on a magnaflow # 12245. Just took stock muffler off, put on the magnaflow and had to weld a 16" in piece to make up the room of the stock muffler. Was very cheap, sounds good, did have to make a new hanger but no big deal. Used aluminised pipe as out here in Colorado theres very little rust and no salt in the winter.

Yeah, they cut the hangers from the pipe itself. So I'm ok? Well then, back to plan A. mkinttrim, thanks for the part #.

Another question... If I get the Magnaflow si/so with a 2-1/4" inlet/oulet, will my stock 2-1/2" exhaust pipe fit over the 2-1/4" inlet/oulet with no problems? Thanks. You guys are a big help.

It fit mine without any problems, the part number that I quoted is for the Magnaflow 5" X 8" X 18" muffler, they make a 12" but is fairly loud and you get a constant drone in the cab at highway speed. The 18" is a little mellower but sounds good, imagine that it will get a bit louder once the insulation gets a little more packed.

mkinttrim, does your muffler have centered inlet/outets? Or is it offset/center? Thanks for the help.

I did same thing on my 98. I just took out stock muffler and put in si/so flowmaster 40 2.5 inch pipe. One end is cented the other is offset. I had to make a hanger for it and put in almost 2 feet of extra pipe. It sounds pretty good, real good rumble at 2000 rpm and really growls when i first start it.

I've given this some thought. And I think I'll just get a Gibson single exhaust. It comes with hangers, all necessary mounting hardware, and a polished stainless tip for $269.99. I think I'll spend the extra money and get that instead of piecing together an exhaust out of my old exhaust. Thanks for all the help.

That's a better idea than your original. If you are staying SI/SO, you need to go up in pipe diameter to gain any performance. Staying with the stock tailpipe diameter will only net you better sound.

You would have to go with a bigger diameter tailpipe to get a performance increase if staying with single tailpipe. (As Gibson, and all the other aftermarket single exhaust systems do.) Good decision!

You still get some performance increase with a freeflow muffler even with stock pipes. After all you still have the stock pipes that lead up to it. In this case "bigger is not always better"
