need exhaust for my 05 4.6 help

please help

I WAS GOING TO GET SOME FLOWMASTERS AND THEN READ THE GREAT POSTS ON THE MAGNA FLOWS. I ASKED THE GUY AT THE MUFFLER SHOP AND HE SAID MAGNA FLOWS ARE USUALLY PUT THE THE EXPEDTIONS BECAUSE THE THEY ARE QUITE BUT THERE WAS NO PERFORMENCES DIFFRENCE. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ON HEAR THE FLOWMASTERS CAUSES LOW END TOURQ LOSS. I HAVE ALSO READ 2.5 PIPE IS RECOMMENDED FOR THE 4.6. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT.

Hey Sharkn, glad to see another San Jose resident on the site! I too have a 2005 F150 with the 4.6L and have experienced 2 different exhausts on this truck. My first exhaust was a 40 Series Original Flowmaster dumped before my rear axle. The muffler was a SI/SO with 2.5 inch diameter. Although I made slight gas mileage gains, I lost all my low end torque. While the dump probably had something to do with this, people with complete piping have reported losses with the Flowmaster. I replaced this system with an IMCO 1-chamber SI/SO 3-inch muffler and am extremely happy with the system. I am running 3 inch pipe out behind my rear tire with a 24x3.5 inch angle cut tip and it sounds great. It's way too loud for most though. I have also regained and even added some torque compared to stock, and my gas mileage has gone up slightly (it would go up more if I wasn't mashing the pedal out of stop lights!)

As far as pipe diameter, if you're going to go with true duals get 2.25 inch pipes. If you are getting SI/DO, get 3 inch in, 2.5 out. If you are going with SI/SO, get a 3 inch in/out. On these trucks, most agree that the SI/SO configuration provides the largest gains.

Finally, regarding Flowmaster vs. Magnaflow, there is in fact a large difference. If you look in a Flowmaster, you cannot see any light from the other side. The multiple walls and baffles assure that there won't be any great amount of exhaust flow. Basically it is a "sound only" muffler. Magnaflows are a truly "straight through" design. If you look through one, you can see all the way to the other end of the muffler. It is basically a straight pipe with holes all around it. The Magnaflow is actually a little quieter than Flowmaster, but it will increase rather than decrease performance. Case in point, I just installed a Magnaflow SI/SO on my girlfriend's 2002 F150 4.2L. The previous idiot....er...owner installed a 50 Series Flowmaster and the truck had NOTHING off the line. I mean, floor it and it stood still for 3 seconds till it reached about 3000 RPMs. I went with 3 inch pipes, which I thought was too big but my muffler man assured me it would be great, and he was right. It sounds a whole lot better, and there is a night and day difference in the power off the line. Even the girlfriend noticed! I would recomend Magnaflow unless you want it super loud. Then go with an IMCO.

If you're looking for a shop to do it at, I would recomend Babe's Lightning muffler on San Tomas Aquino Rd. in Campbell. Gary is the MAN! I've had quite a few of mine and my family and friend's vehicles done there. If you tell Gary Dave with the F150 sent you, he'll give you a discount. Good luck man!

I work across the street from the perk ponds so i will check that shop out but my cousin works at morgan hill ford and has been getting me some great deals from the guy they send all their trucks to in gilroy. He gave a price of about $280 dual flowmasters angled right behined the tires with 4 inch chrome tips. I was thinking the 4" tips were kinda big. I am definitely gonna go with the magnaflow just gotta get a price now.

Sweet dude, I bought my truck at the Ford Store in Morgan Hill! Hey, do you think your cousin could hook me up with some "take off" rims from some F150s they had done? I'm looking for something to replace these terrible XL wheels with - maybe even find some of those cool Rousch 20s. I work by the ponds off Winchester on Dell Avenue myself.

Ok, have been reading posts, and decided that while I DO like the way my Flowmaster 40 series sounds, I'm going to change it out for a Magnaflow.

Problem is, I don't have loads of money, so all I can afford at this time is just to swap the muffler out for a Magnaflow. From what I'm seeing, though, that will still recover some lost torque, and still sound very good. Opinions?

Hey Sharkn that's cool man. Tell me when you get your exhaust. Can you ask your cousin what take-offs he has lying around? Hey, I think I remember you saying in another post you have the AF1 for the 4.6L. How do you like it? Is power/MPG improved or is it just a looks/sound only thing? Thanks man!

Noname05, I did not change my factory Y-pipe to make sure I maintained sufficient backpressure for my 4.6L. My muffler man simply welded a pipe that flared from 2.5 to 3 inches right before where he installed the muffler. The piping is of course 3 inches all the way back from there. I would buy it from performance-curve.com, for $35.99 it's a hell of a deal for great sound.

Kung, just noticed your post. Just the muffler swap will do the trick. You'll feel the difference! There's some debate as to whether a full catback is worth it, and my opinion is mandrel bends aren't necessary in a SI/SO system unless your motor is verrrrrrrry unstock.

yeah but I have called scott @ performance for a week now and left a couple emails and I have only spoken to him once and he seemed like he didn't know what was going on, he told me to call him back once I knew how big my exhaust was b4 and after muffler. I want a si/do so i guess I should do 2.5'' in and 2.5" out or maybe a 3'' in and a 2.5'' out,

You got the extreme right?

I dont know its just been a mission cause this is the only guy I can find that sells them without having to be retail and I cant freakin track him down.

Hey thanks Sharkn! Yeah, I take it pretty easy on my truck as well. I'm thinking about an intake of some kind, either an airaid or the AF1. As long as the fit and finish were flawless and there are no CELs I'll go with the AF1.
