Installing headers & oxygen sensor Q
Hello to all, I have a few q's about the way to go about installing new exaust on my f150. Its a 93 302 5.0L 4x4, reg cab. We are working on removing the manifolds this weekend, and the entire exaust has been removed from there back. (we lifted the engine, and replaced my oil pan gasket, and upper intake manifold gasket yesterday, and had to remove the exaust to remove the oil pan... quite the pain in the butt) I picked up a set of used long tube headers from a friend os mine, off of his 302, and I also have the pipes that connect to the headers and then back onto the cat. My question is when we took off my exaust, we unpluged the oxygen sensor, which was placed on the pipe directly in front of my cat. There is no way I can remove the sensor from the pipe itself, the truck has 215,000 miles on it, and its stuck on there forever (not to mention it is probably shot anyway). when i went online to check out prices and such of new oxygen sensors, they said that even the oem one was mounted somewhere on the manifold. I dont really understand how you would go about installing a new oxygen sensor into the pipes. (if this helps, we unplugged the wires and only removed the bottom portion that goes into/connects to the exaust pipe. we didn't mess with anytying above that) is that the entire sensor itself when i buy it at an autoparts store, that you plug into the wire hanging down from the engine, or do I only need part of that? We have all the other componants, and I understand them just fine, but I am not quite up to date on this oxygen sensor thing, where it goes, what it does (Im guessing it senses amt of oxygen???) or how expensive they are to replace. A friend is helping me do all this, who understands it all a lot more than I do, but I was curious to see if anyone would want to give me a lesson on 'replacing manifolds with headers, and all electronic componants' for dummies.... thanks ya'all.....
