Exhaust leak question

Trying to track down a hollow tick sound on my 2000 4.6 romeo.

it does it at any temp, increases in repetition as the rpm's go up, but not in intensity. can hear it between 1k and 2k rpm only when under load. If i push in the clutch and rev the engine, no sound. no sound at idle. and it's not pinging, i know what that sounds like (not is it piston slap).

My question: would an exhaust leak only be noticeable when the engine is under load? if so, why? should I look somewhere else? w/ a mechanics stethoscope, think I could find it as idle even though I can’t hear it at idle w/ my ear?
