Foil & Jb Weld ????
Hi all...I just purchased a 2000 Ford F150...It is lifted and looks great and runs great...But 2 days after I purchased it the exhaust started getting loud...well now it has been over 2 weeks and it is real loud..So I got under it to look at the exhaust and it was kind of funny...There was a bunch of foil...not the kind you buy at an auto parts store, but the kind you buy at a grocerie store...I took it off of one side and there was a bunch of grey stuff which I believe is JB weld....I dont know much about exhausts but I do know that if you can cook on it it probably shouldnt be on your exhaust system...I was told that it would cost like 60.00 just to have a guy take the pipes off the truck and clean the crap off of them...and then another 200.00 to weld the pipe onto where ever it goes...Is that about right? And if it is, why would someone take the time to put the foil and JB Weld crap on there??? Also...Is this messing up my gas milage or my engine in any way? I am only getting about 8 to 10 Miles to the gallon...!!!Can someone enlighten me please??Thanks...

Sounds to me like a temporary patch that someone who was looking to sell their truck did instead of fixing it right. Don't know if that price is reasonable for your area or not, but you can get a complete stainless (=never rust again) catback system for under $400. Have fun with that new truck!
I've heard of bad patches, but that has to be one of the worst. I've used a pop can and hose clamps, but not JB Weld.
As to replacing the system, depending on where the hole is. if it's a pipe or muffler, replace the whole thing (one bad spot, the rest is on it's way out). If it's the cat (catalytic converter), it's going to cost more.

WOW 260 for a new piece of pipe, i would look around at a few mom and pop shops.. i had my whole exhaust from the manifolds back replaced for 275! if it is a muffler hole i suggest looking at buying a new one anyways
if it is a cat, isnt there some type of warrenty that EVERY car/truck has to have like 80 or 100k otherwise its replaced free of charge due to a defect. if not magnaflow has some highflow cats, buy 2 of those and put then in place of the stock 4 cats. you can get those installed for less then 260 i would hope!

I dont believe that there is a hole in any part of the pipe, it is leaking where the pipe goes to the ....headers, or manafold? Youll have to excuse me, I am female and this is not a VW...Lol..I can fix anything on a bug blindfolded...But this is different...lol! It looks like there is a lip around where the foil and JB Weld is that actually needs to be welded...everything else looks new. But the thing that I am really concerned with is the gas milage and what the leak may be doing to the engine, I was told that it could be sucking in cold air and it could end up messing up my valves....?
it wont hurt anything, but gas mileage could drop.. by drop i mean like.05 mpg or soemthing... u wont notice it.. more of an annoying thing. i would just look for a good welder or a mom and pop shop for a second opinion... it really isnt that hard that it would be 260
