Question Magnaflow high flow cats question

I am having the Magnaflow SIDO cat back exhaust system put on my 1.5 year 2004 F150 4x4 Screw after complaining of vibration to my dealership. They put on the original exhaust (Flowmaster SIDO) at the time of purchase. I had a Ford engineer drive test my truck with me today and he concluded the vibration was exhaust drone. (he did offer to put a EVA on it again but he felt it would not show driveline vibration)

The dealership is doing this at no cost to me. (Two big thumbs up to them!!)

Well to make a long story even longer, I went to the muffler shop with the aftermarket sales person. She got them to commit to finishing tomorrow. I asked the mechanic how much it would cost me to add the Magnaflow high flow cats to my truck. He mumbled something about warranty and then told me that he was not allowed to add them until the truck had 80,000 miles on it. I re-iterated that I would pay for them, and he told me that he was not allowed to replace my factory cats since they where still working until 80,000 miles.

Does this sound correct?

Hey Crash!

I was told by a guy at Car-X that he couldn't touch anything from my cats on.

I'm in CA, land of the smog *****... But I think the rules are the same.

Here, it is against the law to tamper with a functioning cat.

But if something like a large rock or a hammer were to, say, bash the cat until the internal substrate fell apart, then the cat would no longer be functioning. And it would be your duty as a good citizen to replace these cats with new, functioning ones.

And since the Magnaflows cost like 1/10th of what Ford factory cats cost, well, that seems like the way to go.

HOWEVER, I'm not totally convinced that the factory cats are all that restrictive. Especially on a newer vehicle. If I were you, I'd keep the facotry cats as long a possible, and just replace the exhaust system after the cats.

I am pretty sure Federal laws prevent anybody from removing, repairing, or replacing a functioning cat. There is a thread on it somewhere around here....
