Exhaust in Front of Rear Tire?

Would a single 3.5" pipe in front of the rear tire at a 45 degree angle on both sides be cool looking for my 94 F150 4x4? I think it would be different and unique. What would be a good loud flowmaster muffler for my 5.8L V8?

look in my gallery. There are pics of my '88 with two exits with 3" tips in front of the rear wheel.

heard that wastn such a good idea..

i was planning on doing that same exact thing..until i was talking to a ford tech about it at work...anyone ever tried taking a tire of a F-150 with the exhaust coming out in front of the rear tire?..pretty corroded ...all that heat and sulfur and junk coming out of that ends up coming right over to the tire and wheel..which in turn isnt a good thing..yeah it would probably look cool..but for the sake of your wheels and drums..you might want to go with them coming out after the tires..

I got a 97 f150 that came stock with the pipe out in front of the tire. Looks, works good. Put a 50 series flowmaster, 3" from cat to muffler, muffler to tip, 4 inch tip. Better than ford stock 2 3/4" pipe.

My friend put the same on his but moved the location from behind the tire to in front. Same motor different year but way louder inside the cab, go figure.

I've heard this assumption made a couple times here lately, and I thought I would post a counter opinion.

A. Seems to not be a problem with all those Lightnings. (engineered by Ford)
B. Seems to not be a problem with everyone else out there that have done this to their trucks. Like Me.
C. Yes, I have rotated my tires three times, and wash them about every other weekend. I have not noticed anything out of the norm. No corrosion either. Just a little brake dust, and dried up dog ****.

I do agree, it looks cool!!!

If you want your tips in front of your tires, go for it!!

kbldawg, why did Ford issue a TSB to move the 1997 F-150 exhausts behind the rear wheel?

For specialty vehicles where owners take the necessary care for their wheels, it is fine. For average Joe 600k/per year vehicle, exhaust before the wheel isn't smart.

APT,
Thanks for the additional input. I am not aware of the TSB you are referring to, you would have to answer that question for us.

I'm sure some folks did have problems, thus the TSB. However, the fact that it is a TSB, and not a RECALL is proof that it was a problem for SOME owners and not all. Just like the vibration issue with SOME of the 04s. Does that mean we all have the vibe? Or the leaky 3rd break light. We all know there are TSB for just about anything, but I don't think I would flat out say, DO NOT do this or DO NOT do that.

I understand your point and it is a valid one. I would urge any considering this type of exhaust to pay close attention to their wheels and tires, and put a little more effort in making sure they look and work properly.

I will watch mine a little more closely from now, so I do appreciate your input.

Regards,

That's the bottom line. Extra care than what the average person does.

On 97 trucks, the center cap became oxidized and turned green.
