What if the muffler was off?
What if the muffler was off?
If i cut out my flowmaster 40 series muffler and just made it straight pipe, how much louder might it be? I would leave the cats, but also wondering if there would be any big power sacrifices or engine problems without the muffler

Exactly what I did on my 98 4.6--sounds really good, better than any muffler setup in my opinion. Didnt notice any power/torque loss either, if anything a very slight gain in gas milage. Plus it was cheap to have the muffler cut out and would be cheap to have another welded in
I cut off the factory muffler and had a piece of pipe put in it's place. (Single straight pipe, factory pipe size).
Sounded GREAT until you got up high in RPM's, then it sounded crappy. I wound up putting a 21" glasspack on. Sounds good, but not loud enough for me.
I noticed no performance difference, and a little better fuel mileage.
I am looking to do a dual exhaust setup now.

It will be louder. You will lose power and low-end torque. Smarter and wealthier people will look down their noses at you and pity you for intentionally ruining your truck.

LOL...That's great!.
However... I lost nothing and gained abut 1 mpg after cutting out the factory muffler. Just sounded terrrible at high RPM's.
Going with true duals Thursday.

my 4.6 sounds pretty dam good above 4500 with straight pipes....nice roar but the best sound is about half throttle, the nice rumble....id try it and see, i doubt youll be dissapointed
I had true duals ran on my truck this morning.
Cut the pipes just after the cats and ran two 2.25" pipes, with 2 18" glasspacks. Exiting just behind each rear tire at a 45 degree angle.
Only $200 and looks like good work (first time I have ever used this muffler shop) time will tell.
So far I like the sound, but have only driven it about 60 miles since the work was done. I can say that, without a doubt, the truck has lost no low-end at all, and has definitely gained a tad from 1800 RPM and higher. I haven't towed a trailer yet, so I am anxious to see how that goes also. And any mileage comparisons will have to wait until I get used to the roar out the back. It sounds too good to try to be easy on the throttle right now!
I give the deal a big
at this early stage.

I had the stock muffler cut off and a second pipe ran out the back and the truck sounds great....I've been pleased. No noticeable gain or loss in hp or mpg just an awesome sound at any rpm.....really cool when firing it up.
What about cutting open a stock muffler and taking a lot of the junk out inside? wouldnt you get better sound and have enough backpressure to keep the low end torque from dropping some?

I cut the muffler open and removed the baffle tubes in one of the chambers (03 f150 harley has two chambers with DI/DO), welded it back up with the weld on the top so it looks stock from underneath. sounds deep and not to loud but better than stock
