Magnaflow 15609 Install Question
Magnaflow 15609 Install Question
OK, I have my new Magnaflow 15609 Catback system but have yet to tackle the installation. The cold weather, slop dripping under the truck, and promise of "Significant Snowfall" this coming week have convinced me that even with the new garage I should wait. I did take a look under the truck this morning and have a few questions for those who have installed this system.
My truck's stock exhaust has a hanger and vibration damper on the intermediate pipe but there is none on the Magnaflow kit. I am guessing that I can do without the hanger, but is the damper necessary? Since the new intermediate pipe is 3" the old damper won't fit without modification so what did you guys do?
Also, is it possible to get the stock system off the truck without cutting it? I do not have a lift and after looking at it, it looks like it would be a pain to wiggle out of there.
Finally was anyone successful in using the supplied stainless steel clamps? Everyone that I have heard of has snapped them off so I bought some regular steel ones just in case.
Any input or advise would be greatly appreciated as it seems like the install will be at least a week away.....

I put the 15609 on my Supercrew....
You will need to make 1 cut to get the old system off the truck.
I made mine just behind the stock muffler. Instead of using my Sawzall, I used a large cut-off disc on a 7 1/4 Circular saw. It cut like butter.
You can pre soak the stock clamps nuts with Liquid Wrench if you think you need to, But mine came right off (I have air tools)
Spray soapy water on the rubber grommets for the hangers, they will slip on and off easier.
Assemble all your new pieces holding it up with jack stands and get the tip exactly how you want it before you tighten the clamps down tight.
I positioned my tip pretty straight out, closer to the fender well than they say to , and the heat hasn't been an issue.
I did not re-use the Vibration Dampner, but save it if you want, and get a larger clamp if you decide you need it later.
Stainless clamps are softer than the steel ones. I used the stainless ones, But I snapped one. As long as you don't over do it, you should be fine. remember it is not a "High Pressure system" so you dont have to clamp it down super hard.
It only took me about 45 minutes from start to finish including getting my compressor/tools etc put back up.
Hope this helps......your gonna like the exhaust, just remember it will get louder after it breaks in also.

OK, climbed under the truck with intentions of installing the new exhaust today, but a 15mm rusted nut on the band clamp that holds the intermediate pipe to the cat had other plans
. That SOB would not budge even with liquid wrench. Didn't help that all I had in way of 15mm wrenches was a short combination wrench, no leverage at all. I have a sawzall, but wasted about 2 hours cursing that nut. I became so PO'd that I decided to wait until next weekend. I will be armed with a breaker bar and deepwell 15mm socket as well as a fresh blade in the sawzall. I could not believe how frozen that nut was, I have less than 6,000 miles on that truck and it is only two years old. Maybe next weekend I will get it.......

If you don't have access to an oxy-acet. rig then try a propane unit on the nuts. Just watch where you point that thing under the truck, there is a gas tank under there. With the oxy-acet. torch I put mine on in under an hour, didn't even jack it up ( 4X4).
That cutoff blade on a circular saw sounds interesting.
