Tips size matter?

I was just hinking and was curious if the actual tip diameter makes a difference in the sound??

Just today I changed from a 3.5" x 12" tip to a 4" x 18". It definitely is deeper and mellower. I'm not sure of the word I'm looking for but I think the 3.5" was "sharper".

That's what worries me about the Magnaflow catback setup. I do NOT want a droning sound from my exhaust at all, but all they offer is one w/ a 4" tip. KC, did you like the sound of the 3.5" better? Do you lean towards the "get it loud" crowd, or more towards getting a bit more rumble than stock?

No contest, the 4" tip sounds better. Mind you I have the Gibson SI/SO system. It's 3" pipe thru-out with a 24" long muffler. Gibson isn't know for loudness, several other posts have people complaining about how quiet their systems are. Here's a link that shows how loud Gibson says their system is compared to stock.

http://www.gibsonperformance.com/faq.asp

On this chart they indicate stock is 0 and this system is a 1, meaning only marginally louder than stock. That is very true of this system. It is ever so slightly louder than stock, but it does sound much BETTER than stock. Now that the 4" tip is on there, I am very happy with this system overall.

Ironically enough, the tip I used was a Magnaflow:

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...ne=main&id=712

It was the only tip I could find that was 18" long with a rolled edge. I had to cut the end off to get it on the 3" pipe but it looks and sounds good which is all I wanted. I think the Gibson 12" clamp-on tips look a little on the wimpy side. The guy that welded it on said the exhaust and tip would probably outlast the truck.

In order of priority, I was looking for the following in an exhaust system:
1. Increased mileage. This was my number one goal. I get about 1.5 mpg more than stock.
2. Better sound. I could care less about the "Hey, hear how loud my exhaust is!!!!" school of thought. It's juvenile at best and illegal (in some places, like NJ) at worst. I wanted a nice rumble to let me know a V8 is under the hood. I have that now.
3. Better looks. With the nice 18" x 4" polished SS tip sticking out in the stock location ( I hate the double barrel under the bumper look ), I think it looks much better than the rusting (started to rust as soon as they salted the roads) stock tip.

Do you have a pic with the 18" tip, I am considering one but want to make sure it doesnt look to long for just a single side exit tip.
