straight pipes

If I run straights on a 4.6 will I lose any performance? I would keep the cats.

even running 2" pipes being if you run true duals you under 35oo rpm torque will suffer

Yes, you will. If you want to make noise with straights, install cut-outs, so you can cork them back up when you (or others) get sick of hearing them or you want the torque back.

Cut outs are made by cutting a hole in the side of your exhaust pipe and welding a pipe over the hole to make an additional outlet. The end of the pipe is commonly "capped" by bolting a cover over it, which allows your normal exhaust, with mufflers, to function. This outlet is made rearward of the engine and cats, but before the muffler. With the caps off, the exhaust exits out the cut out as a unrestricted, unmuffled, open headers-type sound. There are also products that replace the bolt on caps and open the cut outs mechanically, from the cab, with cables or an electrically actuated door. The bolt on cap is a simple, cost-effective method. Here is an example of the electric version:

Straight pipes sound like crap. Just get a decent exhaust system. My truck seems like its a little louder with the bullet on it than it was with no muffler.

I removed my muffler today, the new one will be here tomorrow. I started it and it realy doesn't make a hell of a lot of noise, it kinda depressed me. Well, lets see what the magnaflow sound like tomorrow. If I don't like it, I guessi I will have to get a glass pack.

Godspeed 03 4.2 V-6

i just installed my banks monster exhaust.when i dropped the stock muffler i ran the truck with straight headers around the block. i could definently tell a loss of torque and it sounded like crap but it was LOUD. i put the banks exhaust an and wasnt much quiter. has a much better deep tone though and didnt notice much of a power loss. get the banks monster exhaust. its worth it.

Mike in Texas,
Wow, you have one of the last of the great T/A's. What condition is it in, and which paint scheme do you have? Don't have one myself, but a friend of mine does, and I have a 67 GTO 400/335 TH400 His/hers, 3.23LS Black/White.

Right now its sitting my garage wrecked and waiting on funds for a rebuild. It was my first car. Dad has a 65 GTO 389/4speed, red/black. My TA was orginally white with camel tan int. but I painted it black. After I finish college it will get a 455+ motor and a fresh restoration.
