getting a Magnaflow, should I get a tip?

I have decided on a Magnaflow to replace the stock muffler. It's a stainless steel, 2.5 in & out, 5x8x18. That's part #14246, 14256, or 14263 depending on the entrance/exit location.

So my next question is should I get some kind of a tip? Will this do anything or is it just there to look pretty? I'd just get it welded on to the stock 2.5" pipe.

I'm guessing it will just project the sound. Kind of like a megaphone effect, the bigger the bell the louder it projects or something like that. If it would make any difference, what size should I get? How long and what diameter?

Anyways I appreciate any help. Let me just say that this site is awesome! It is a very powerful tool that has answered alot of my questions and educated me enormously.

Tips are a nice dress up for very little money. When I got my duals. I had them install 3" tips with rolled edges for 50 extra bucks. They look much better than just a tail pipe...Kevin

I have a 2.5 si/do with 4inch tips that are 18 inches long. Before the tips the truck sounded good, with the tips I find my truck has a slightly deeper burbling sound when cruising around at part thottle. Plus they look cool.

If you get a tip/tips, make sure they're stainless. Mine rusted inside of 2 years, even with exhaustive (no pun intended) cleaning every week. Chrome ones just don't hold up to road conditions over extended periods.

That being said, I'm recommending turndowns. I just did that this past week and it sounds MUCH more agressive than my tips EVER did.

Id go ahead and spend a few extra bucks and get dual pipes with tips. Wont cost a whole lot more. Plus good size tips make the sound deeper and meaner sounding

True, but ive had my same 3.5x18" chrome tips for 5 years, been thru 4 Missouri winters and regular use, and they still look pretty dam good, a couple little rust spots, but yea i do use chrome polish on them about every 2 weeks when the weather permits. Stainless tips will run you a little more $$
