Backpressure?

I have a 87 f-150 with the I6 engine. I just recently cut my exhaust off right after the cat cause i plan on getting an exhaust shop to do a custom job. It is alot slower now, it feels like i lost alot of torque, someone told me this is because i lost backpressure, what is backpressure? Next question, I was gonna have a shop put in a S/I D/O flowmaster muffler and right the pipes in front of the rear tire. Should this set-up give me back the desired amount of backpressure i need?
