Question muffler - 1 dual in/dual out vs 2 single in/single out

Would 1 (dual in/dual out) perform the same as 2 (single in/single out) mufflers?
I would run each from the dual cats straight into the two systems (no Y-pipe). Will I get enough back pressure? Would the first system just be cheaper and not perform as well? I would like to run each of the tail pipes out in front of the rear tire with bassani tips. Which is better?

briguy, I really don't understand what your asking. Most systems run 1 pipe to a muffler and exit with 2 tail pipes or break the orginial cross over and run dual pipes to each muffler (2) and then 2 tail pipes.

Both systems work fine, have had both, the single pipe with the dual out muffler is the cheapest, due to only buying 1 muffler.

As for you running your exhaust pipes out in front of your rear tires, your going to have a problem on the drivers side, the gas tank is in your way. Most people run both exhaust tips out the passenger side, just like the Lightning.

Cool

You will have enough backpressure with either setup if the system is properly sized. Setup 2 is generally quieter using similar muffler designs. The only cost reduction is the extra muffler savings. Performance-wise it would depend on the muffler design and flow rate; it would be similar on a straight through design for instance. On a lower flow rate muffler you could achieve better performance with 2 mufflers.

I usually buy a 40 series Flowmaster with one 3" inlet and dual 2 1/2" outlets. It has a nice sound and is cheaper than true duals. Also on my trucks, I've added K&N air intake systems. They suck air like a four barrel.

Unhappy

I'm worried that a 40 series would be too loud, I don't want to wake anybody when I come home from my 2nd shift job.

Briguy,

Not trying to confuse you more but have you heard of CGS mufflers? I put a SI/DO on my 93-F150 with 302 about 3 months ago and I love it. It won't wake the neighbors and sounds good when you get on it although it is still not very annoying. I got it because it seemed everyone around here had flow's. Their website is www.cgsmotorsports.com and they will answer emails or you can talk to them in the phone. They also have a DI/DO muffler as well.

Don't laugh it still gets 25mpg.

Don't worry about waking up the neighbours with the FM40's, I've got two of'em on mine and the only time it would be too loud would be if I floored it coming down the street or in the driveway. Really, they're loud, but only when you want them to be. I hope this helps you out.
