Thoughts on newly installed Flowmaster 40
Guys & Gals!
Just had the original Flowmaster 40's installed (single in dual out).
Installation work was done by a professional muffler shop taking about 2 hours.
I have to say the system looks fantastic with dual 3.5" * 18" chrome tips coming out the rear, and the sound is very agressive, especially at the lower RPM's.
It seems that there has been a loss of low end power as I have not yet been able to "burn rubber", but I am hoping this will improve since I put in a K&N filter this morning.
Will keep you posted.

I was thinking of a similar setup. What size piping did tou use from the y pipe to the muffler and then from the muffler to the tips? Second what kinda sound did you achieve at idle and on the gas?

Hey KY!
The inlet on my 40 is a 3 incher so we used a 2.5" pipe with a cone to connect up to 3".
From the muffler, the dual outs are 2.5" and we used 2.5" pipes with 3.5" tips.
The sound at idle is a deep growl-like rumble with the engine warmed and more basslike at startup.
I have actually been considering a change to the 40's with deltaflow because of the agressiveness of this system but you know what?, the more I drive, the more I find am I loving the sound.
It's great!, go with it!.

Hi All
I had my Flowmaster 40 series installed about
a month and a half ago si/do and lost some
bottom end. After reading some posts about
removing the stock Y pipe and installing an
after market Y pipe ( flowmaster Y pipe )i got one and had it installed. Not only did i regain the lost bottom end power, i also picked up a noticable gain in the mid range as well. The best part is my gas mileage went
up a lot.
Here`s the deal on the stock Y pipe, the
exhaust pipe comming from the driver side is
reduced from two and a half to two and a quarter just before it is joined at the Y.
Thats not to bad, but when the stock Y was cut off my truck, i looked at how it was joined from the inside, the opening in the right pipe were the left pipe is welded to it
is only about an inch and a half. So you have
a two and a half inch pipe reduced down to two and a quarter inches welded to a pipe
with an inch and a half opening.
At least thats how it was on my truck.
Sorry for long post, but i hope this helps
somebody or everybody out
Larry.

Hey Baj
I just got back from a 235 mile trip and
averaging 70 mph i got 18 miles per gallon
and i was driven it like i stole it.
Im sure if i would have driven more at the
speed limit i could have done a lot better.
But thats not as fun.
When i had my Y pipe installed i them run a
3 inch pipe from the Y pipe back to my 40
series flow master, AND IT SOUNDS GOOD.
If you have this done let me know how you like it.
Later.

Hey Larry,
That is great mpg.
At my last fill up I calculated mine as around 12 mpg.
Anyway, back to this y pipe mod, where can I get one for the flowmaster 40?
Truck Performance centre does not carry them and the sales rep actually tried to talk me into buying aftermarket headers instead. (guess what?, They have those in stock!).
Also, what size Y pipe did you use?
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Baj
I got it from jegs, they call it a Y collector, part # 389-Y250300A, it cost 37.99.
Summit also has it, part # FLO-Y250300A
it cost 37.95.
If you have one of these catalogs look in the exhaust section for the Y collector and
then go out and look at the one on your truck
you will see the difference. The front of the
Y is were the pipes from the exhaust manifolds conect they are two and a half inches around. The back of the Y is three
inches around, have the muffler shop run a three inch pipe back to your flow master.
It will flow and sound better.
I also just installed two electric cooling
fans in place of the stock one. If you want
information on this let me know.
If you do the exhaust mod let me know how
you like it.
Have a good day.

Thanks for the help Speeder!
I just ordered a flowmaster Y collector from CDS Performance and it should be here next week.
Once installed, I will let you know how it works.
Again, thanks for the help!
