Unhappy Borla is pretty quiet

I had a Borla system installed on my SCrew today (5.4L) and I can barely hear it. I also had K&N FIPK installed last week. With the FIPK roaring you really have to work to hear the Borla. The gains in horsepower can be felt, mainly above 40-45 mph. I noticed a huge difference between 60-85 mph . I have not noticed a loss on the low-end. I drove it around for about a hundred miles and there is zero drone in the cab. I wanted to get an exhaust system that was more "mature" this time, not the load neighbor bothering sound. I guess I am still more kid than I realized at 32, I really was hoping for more volume.

I read through the threads all the time, but I would like to hear from anyone and everyone ,with the time, about what sytems they have and sound of the system with the FIPK roaring. If you have sounds bytes I would like any and all of them please.

Need some sound in Alaska,
Crewie

Thumbs up

Which Borla system did you get? The Split rear or single? And don't fret. Sound is nice (to a point). ANYONE can design a loud system. But it sure is nice knowing you bought one of the best engineered systems out there.

sundog7,

I have the split rear system. The exhaust has a nice look and the more I have driven it the better the performance. I have gained low end and added a lot between 45-80 mph. The passing is really nice .
It seems as if with each mile the computer adjusts to the exhaust and it gets a little better. It has gotten a litte louder and I have been told it will get a louder over time.
Great look and very impressive performance so far on my 5.4L Screw.

Hey Crewie!

How much did you pay for your Borla system?? I just put in the flip chip, and was all of a sudden bitten by the mod bug! Anyhow, did you get it professionally installed or did you put it on yourself? Total cost? Right now it's a toss up between Borla or the FM 40 or 50 series...

I put on a K&N exhaust. It is also stainless steal and is a quality system. It is quite at idle but has a real nice rumble with a little gas. I am very happy with it. It has the right sound, not to loud not to quite. The best part is the power increase from the line all the way through the entire range. Sorry, but no sound bytes. That is a little beyond my computer expertise.

I too would like to know the prices on a Borla and the K&N. I had a local tire/muffler shop price me dual setup w/Flowmaster muffs and chrome 3in tips for $320, but if I can get a K&N for under 350-400 I might go that way. I know the Borla is going to be way more than that. Just post it or send me an email at thomaswright5714@hotmail.com

Wink

I'm with Crewie. I purchased my Borla Split Rear at Truck Performance Center. Paid $413, but purch'd during their "No Shipping Charge" special. Still, $413 is a good price for a Borla. Borla Online sells the same thing for $599.
We buy exhausts for different reasons. Let's be honest: We all want to have a system that sounds cool. There's still some kid in each of us, right? (Hope so!!) You can buy sound anywhere. Flowmaster. Ravin. Lotsa choices out there. I wanted a decent sound without obnoxiousness AND I wanted a PROVEN performance gain. That brought me to Gibson or Borla. I chose Borla for the stainless and race-proven designs. Yep....I paid more than a Flowmaster. Or Ravin. But I wanted more, too. Does this make sense to anyone else, or am I just singin' out of my pants?
CREWIE: I asked about your Borla the VERY DAY I received mine in the mail. Your post really upset me, but I'm relieved to hear things are getting better!!! (That "kid" in me is jumpin' up and down). I'm installing this weekend. Same thing happened when I installed my Airaid. Nothing for the first few days. Then it I began noticing improvements. Takes awhile for that chip to get with the program, I suppose.

Cool

Blue V6,
I also purchased mine from www.truckperformance.com. I paid $400 for the system and $75 to have ot shipped UPS 2nd day air(there is no ground service to Alaska-the curse of the last frontier is high shippin cost). I had mine installed by a muffler shop, they charged me $65. Not bad, especially since I am not the mechanical type. The Borla system is sweet! There is zero drone in the cab and it did get louder once the computer adjusted . It will roar now when you get into it. I can now chirp the tires off the line-the FIPK and the Borla worked as a great combo on my 5.4 .

Sundog7,
The Borla only gets better!!! I am very happy now. Once the computer adjusts to the new exhaust, you will notice nice power gains-across the entire powerband. I can chirp my tires now . The best feature I have noticed so far about the Borla is zero drone in the cab, that part I really love.
The sound may be weak at first, but will liven-up after 200-300 miles.
