Red face Installed Shortys & Faild smog test ;-(

Help!! if you can. I installed some shorty headers on my 86 F150. I plugged them into my old exaust system.(CAt Backs are comming soon) This truck has passed with a broken exhaust manifold for three years.I replaced all the sensors and check valves too. The guy tht did the test said that my CO was double the legal amount and because I installed headers I changed the dynamics of my Air/Fuel Mixture. Any Ideas on how to recover from this? Adjustment? besides putting the old ones back on. Thanks in advance..

Hi CREEK!
I am not an expert by any means, but IMHO the headers should have no effect upon tail pipe emissions. In fact, I would expect that emissions would be better with headers since they help scavange exhaust from the cylinders which would promote more efficient combustion (i.e. less pollutants). I believe the same can be said for cat back systems. Also, many (most?) of the headers are certified as emissions legal in 50 states and CARB certified as well. At least I know the JBA's are so I am not expecting any problems at inspection time, otherwise I will "blow a gasget".
More likely, I think it is some of the other sensors that are throwing things off as computerized engines are sensitive to changes in them.

I'm with GoDog,
It sounds like one of the sensors are bad, unplugged by accident,or something. You might even check the EGR valve and other related emissions parts..... I bought a $50(cheap) code reader at Autozone, and it really helped out on the 86 E-150 I have. It could be the catalytic convertor has gone bad, too. Buy a code reader, just an opinion,,,,,98
