Post muffler selection

I am thinking about just replacing the big restrictive stock muffler with a perfomance muffler. I want a nice rumble, but nothing that will drive you crazy while doing 70 down the interstate. So what does every body else suggest? I know the v-6 wont sound like a v-8 but i just dont want it to sound like mad hornets.
Thanks
Chuck

cooltrucks,

I have the Ravin' Z-55 as well and am very happy with it. The other mufflers you might want to consider are the Gibson Dual Sport and Flowmaster 50 series. These are all very good quality mufflers and you really can't go wrong with any of them (as the members on this board can attest to). My reason for the Ravin was (1) good performance/sound benefit and (2) price.

Good luck

what did you guys get your ravins for? i went to midas saturday (3-10) and it was going to be close to have 400. i am thinking about just having a ravin muffer put in and enough pipe to fill in the space where the stock muffler is. I am also thinking about a glass pack.
thanks
chuck

Cool

Cool,
I paid 600 for the class 55 with a special adaptor{my truck is 157 wheel base}
with 2.5 inch mandrel bent pipes out the back
with 3inch stainless steel tips angeled to the side alittle.It looks GOOD.Alot of compliments for people at work.{they heard me in the parking lot when i got back!!!!}
It was a custom install.They had to weld special brackets onto the leaf spings.I did it at midas also.I know the guys who work there.I watched and told them where to put the hangers.It was really cool to fire it up after they finished!!!!First time on the hwy today.They are loud at 65-70mph.You need to turn up the stereo.ALSO DON'T FORGET TO MAKE THEM WELD STAINLESS STEEL BRACKETS.I HAD TO PAINT MINE AFTERWORDS!!!THEY RUST FAST!!!

Cooltrucks,

I was originally quoted about $350 which would have included new mandrel bent pipes. However, since I was really focused on keeping my low-end torque up I decided to keep the stock pipes and just replace the muffler. Total cost for this was approx. $165 (the Z-55 was $112 and new hangers and labor made up the rest). Depending on how loud you want it, you may want to go with the Z-33 (which is $91). I like the sound of the Z-55, however, I also know it may not satisfy those looking for something loud (especially if you just go single out).

Good Luck!

Question

cyclone:
how loud is your truck?
is it anoying at hwy speeds?
i want it to rumble real nice at and idle and roar when i stomp it, but i dont what to be driven crazy by a constant loud drone while going down the highway.
the $165 sounds a little more easy to handle.
thanks
chuck

Cooltrucks,

How loud the Z-55 is in the cab is somewhat relative to the setup you go with. I have a SI/SO (factory pipes) so I have very little resonation in the cab. There is a slight drone between 1500-2000 rpm but it is not annoying at all. I believe FST5.4LTR has duals out the back which is probably why his are loud. The thing to keep in mind is that the Z-55 is louder than stock but "much" quieter than the Z-33. Ravin also makes a Z-77 which is the quietest model (no louder than stock really), however, you lose that nice growl when you hit the gas.

Overall, I really like this muffler and I think you would be equally pleased. I has gotten a little louder (and deeper) since I first had it installed and, in my opinion, it now sounds perfect (for my tastes).

Good luck with whatever you choose

Cool

cyclone:
I went back to midas today. $165.22 installed thats for part #RA554242 and enough pipe to fill the stock gap. Thats a 2.25" inlet and single 2.25" outlet, thats they size they said i needed. I may order tomorrow. If i do it I am going to have a tip put on also so that will up the price a little. I may see if they could get a z-33 and a z-55 and let me hear both.

Cooltrucks,

Sounds like you got a great price. I think you will be extremely pleased with your selection. The nice thing about these mufflers is that the "sound" is almost identical between the Z-55 and Z-33 (nice low, smooth rumble) with the only exception being that the Z-33 is louder. If you are going Single Out, the Z-33 might not be as loud as the one I had heard that had a DO setup. Which might make it more acceptable for your needs.

I love the Z-55 but there have been times that the extra growl from the Z-33 would have been nice. Just didn't make much sense for me since the majority of my time is spent on the highway and I feared that the extra volume would wear on me over time.

Good luck with whatever you choose

Regards
