More HP and MPG, noise not important
Any suggestions on what muffler I should put on to increase horsepower and miles per gallon. I would like a little more grrrrr, but that's not as important.
Thanks.

Flowmaster 70 series, almost asquite as stock but I could actually feel a little power increase, can't say that it helped mileage.

How much did it cost you to install it? Are there any other real advantages for switching the muffler?
Thanks.

Hokie- the OEM "garbage can" muffler is restrictive; it flows approx. 200cfms, Some have even reported hot spots on it due to backpressure. Most aftermarket HP mufflers flow 400cfms and up. This becomes important when you have one 2.5" pipe feeding one muffler. Yes, aftermarket exhaust systems (muffler, cat-back, or custom) can increase performance on these vehicles and many systems do a nice job at it. The HP is noticeable, the mileage increase is minimal for me. Just pick your sound desire. Good Luck !!

I ordered the muffler thru internet for about $100 and installed it myself. The length is very close to stock and if you cut the old muffler off right at the welds you will not need extension pipe, made my own rear hanger. You will probably have to special order the 70 series in 2.5" in and out most places only stock 3". Look at www.flowmaster.com for the right model # for your ride. If you don't have oxy/acl rig or other good cutting tool, I would recommend having it done at muffler shop, probably run about $50. shop around.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions.
This is the Flowmaster 70 I saw on the net for under $100. http://shop.store.yahoo.com/exhaustp...w70serbig.html
What would it take to have it come out in front of the rear wheel with crome tips? Also, what would I have to do extra to make it dual?
I just don't know much about exhaust systems! I now need to decide to do the exhaust or Superchip first, any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hey Hokie,
I would definitely agree that the FM 70 is probably the best choice for a semi-quiet muffler, that is less restrictive then stock.
As far as your "dual" question goes: If you want to run true duals, you are looking at install being expensive, as you have two mufflers, two tips, two sets of piping, an h-pipe or balance pipe, etc. If you want you can get the same appearance of running a single in, dual out muffler, which doesn't start running two sets of pipes until after the muffler.
Good luck with whatever way you decide to go.

Hokie,
Just a quick cost and time saving tip if you do it yourself....
Get an exhaust tubing cutter from the loaner tools at a local auto parts place. You can cut the old muffler off in no time. Saves fighting with the clamps and crap. They also usually have adapters and small pipe pieces in case you have to add a couple inches to fit the new muffler.
I just put on a Gibson system last week. Had the back section and muffler cut off in no time. Getting the clamp and pipe off the front header piper took WAY more time.
The cutter I got looked primitive, chain with round cutting wheels. That little tool saved me a LOT of time!

Hey fellow F150 owners,
I had the Gibson cat back split rear system installed on my '00 F150 with a 4.6L. By itself, I noticed a definite sound difference but not alot of power change.
Since, I've added the Gibson short headers, K&N Generation II FTPK, Granatelli MAS, 75 mm BBK throttle body, PowerAid spacer, Underdrive pulleys, changed the rear (2wd) gears to 3:73's, and (unfornately) added the Jet Stage II chip. My custom Superchip will be arriving soon!
Now with all this added on, the 4.6 came alive and is pretty quick.

Near future modifications: Custom Superchip, Perma-cool high performance stainless steel flex fan, Mr. Gasket Hi-Flow thermostat (160), and the white faced gauge kit. More to be changed! I just love it!
