Post Gibson Sweptside or Borla

I'm thinking about one of these two to replace the stock exhaust and have a few questions.
- Loudness - I don't want a real aggressive sound that will attract a lot of attention, but something a bit throatier would be nice. What would work best for me? BTW I'll probably be getting an Air Force 1 FIPK or K&N.

- Any ideas on which is an easier install?

- Borla seems to be higher quality(it should be for the $). Is the Gibson going to hold up well?

-Any other thoughts? Any other systems I should look at?

Thanks,
Clancy

Cool

From my understanding, that is one of the only reasons why Borla is so much. The entire thing is stainless steel. Whereas most of the exhaust systems come with stainless steel tips only. I think that the gibson will definitely hold up. I don't know what size engine a v8 Ram has but the gibson sounds good on my friends truck. Not to loud, but noticable when stepped on. Also what about getting like a FM 50. Those are pretty popular on the big v8's on this board. Good Luck!

If you're interested, I just ordered the Gibson Swept Side in SS from Truckperformance.com for my 2000 Expedition. It's on sale for $369 and ground delivery is free.

You can get the aluminized Swept Side from Roger here at f150online.com for about $275 until Dec. 31. You won't find it listed in the "Online Store" but email him at roger@f150online.com or RLEM1997@aol.com and he'll get it for you. I shopped it to death and that's as good as you'll get on the aluminized one. Truckperformance.com couldn't be beat on the stainless steel.

Roger is great and will help you with any questions you may have too. I did buy my Airaid from him and wanted to buy the Gibson as well but truckperformance.com is really blowing out the SS right now.

Hey familyride, thanks for posting that info on the Gibson sweptside. I was about to have one installed for about 450.00 so you only saved me about 200.00. Thanks again I ordered it from Roger today and can't wait to put it on Saturday.

I hope you have better luck w/ your Gibson than I had. The fit wasn't right and it had a severe internal rattle after one year.

Now I Have a Flowmaster and love it...should have gone that route in the 1st place.

No problem Mikey88. I wanted to order from Roger but I decided on the S/S and he couldn't compete. I bought my Airaid from him though. He's a good guy.

Let me know how the install goes.

Hey dlsipe, I got my gibson and it would not fit my truck unless I made major modifications to it so I too went with the flowmaster and sent the Gibson back. Do you feel power gains with the Flowmaster and which one did you get?

Thumbs up

My truck got a stainless Gibson side swept for Christmas. Install was painless, getting the old crap off was 80% of the work. The stainless system is still a little cheaper than the Borla if I remember correctly.

I remember seeing an article on the Borla in Truckin. They got around 12 HP (peak) gain. This was a split rear system.

Mikey88-
I had to have the gibson system bent and welded to fit the truck. When the muffler went to hell, I had it cut out and a 2 chamber 3" Flowmaster put in its place.

As far as power or mileage, I can't tell a difference, however the Flowmaster definitely has a more aggressive sound.

Just installed a Borla split rear system (14808) today. Getting the old exhaust was 90% of the work. The new system went on fairly well. Had to jockey the pipes around quite a bit to get them to fit correctly. Still not quite satisfied, probably will do some "fine tuning" if it ever warms up.

The rear tips look awesome, either you like them or you don't.

The exhaust is fairly quiet at idle (actually I started and ran the truck with the old exhaust system off, I wonder if you might get by without a muffler, it didn't sound as loud as I expected), sounds great while accelarating, a pretty good drone at highway speeds.

I'll post pictures later.

Picture of the completed installation of the Borla split rear system. Please excuse the appearance of my truck. I've given up trying to keep it clean this winter. I wash it every now and again to keep the road salt off.
