I heard also that "dumping" the exhaust right after the muffler will make it louder. From a local muffler shop (more performance concerned) the only way to get more throaty and deep sound is by adding a large echo tip. Hence the name, echo. The bigger, the louder.

I've heard a Flomaster 40 Series dumped right after the exhaust on a 5.4L'd Expedition, and it sounded wimpy. I'd say, don't do it.

Do you have the 40 Series regular or Deltaflow? The deltaflow is quieter. I'm sure you know that. I think the only way for people like me and you who really want a loud, aggressive rhumble must delete the muffler from the system. I wouldn't say take out the cats though.

These Fords are definitely quiet. As far as I know, we're going to have to live with that. I've heard some pretty loud 97+ F150's, but I'm betting they're very stripped. Sorry for the long response.

Long response? HA!!! Have you seen some of mine lately? Anyway...after calling Flowmaster, I decided to go with a turn down, and boy am I pleased with it!!! The stock setup is all mangled looking when it's out from underneath the truck. Check some of my posts in the other exhaust forum, and thanks for the reply man!!!

Question FM 40 in stock location, or turndown?

I have a 2001 4.6L with a FM 40 in the stock location with a stainless 10" X 3 1/2" tip. It's nice, but definately NOT LOUD ENOUGH!!! Would adding a turn-down after the muffler help me out any? If so, how long, ans what diameter? Will it effect low-end?
