Post straight pipes??

I am under the impression that straight pipes make one of the loudest sounds possible. Now excuse my ignorance but is that a straight pipe from the cat or does the cat have to be removed? Also is this legal to not have a muffler and just pipes in CA? Last question, will this improve or lose hp and torque? Thanks again guys!

split,
the straight pipes aren't as loud as you would think...too much for some, but i like 'em...don't know about the laws in CA., but in the south most of the guys run straights...at least the ones that tinker with the exhaust...all they do here is cut-off your muffler and place in a y-pipe and run your pipes...never even get near the cats, as far as loss of torque goes, stay with a smaller diameter pipe, i run 2.25" and have no problems....also, i think my truck gained some top-end, at least it feels quicker when i pass someone...good luck, Rich
