Where to buy Flowmaster?
I just got my new truck ( 2000 4.6L 4x4 Off Road package ) and want to change the muffler out with a cat-back system.
After reading alot of posts on the subject I have decided to go with Flowmaster. Now where can I get a system? And how much should I expect to pay?

Hi Ren,
You should check out the online store right here on F-150 Online. You can access it by clicking on the link that says "Online Store" on the left side of your screen.
They have good pricing, and you also help to support this web site by doing business there.
Best of luck whatever you decide,

Thanks,
I guess I should try reading some more of the menu on the left side.
Mike, thanks for your help today on the phone with my chip question. Also I have read some more about exhaust and now I'm considering a system from Jardine. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Alot of people swear by Flowmaster, but they do have the lowest flow rates in the industry. Look at a-1performance.com . Good to Poor = Dynomax, Borla, Edelbrock, Flowmaster (aka Flowlaster). Also consider what exit location and sound level you want. If you keep your truck a long time or drive in extreme weather, consider stainless steel(like Borla or Bassani). Exhaust systems are a very controversial topic at this website. My opinions only, others will inevitably vary. Dynomax is the largest exhaust co in the world and they are cheap.

Hmm seems kinda odd to me how sooo many Professional DragRacers worldwide would put 10s of thousands of dollars into their engine just to top it off with some 'flowlasters'. BTW Dynomax mufflers are notorious for rusting out in 2 years.

Flowmaster has the lowest flow rate? I don't think so. Maybe if you measure them on a flow bench which just pumps air through at a steady rate. Are they run under the same condtions as they would on a vehicle? Engines send hot exhaust through in pulses, not a steady flow at room temp. Flowmasters are supposed to be designed to work best with the pulsing air flow an engine produces. Other mufflers are just designed to give the highest flow rate on the bench so they can quote impressive (but meaningless) numbers.
As was mentioned, the pros use Flowmaster. They don't care about sound, appearance or cost. They run what works best. I was on a web page that was pushing another brand (I forget which one). I was looking at their employees' cars section. 90% were using Flowmaster!
GM is the largest auto maker, we should trade in our Fords for a Shovie?!?
Whatever, any aftermarket muffler is going to flow better than that stock thing hanging there. It's not hard to improve on that.
P.S. I'm no exhaust expert, I'm just regurgitating what I have heard/read over the years.

I love my flowmaster 30 series muffler. It made a niticeable difference compared to stock. I'm not an exhaust expert, so I had mine done at meineke. Comes with a lifetime guarantee. Plus i got the fake duals coming out the back. Doesn't do anything performance wise, just give it that "beefy" look.

If Dynomax is good enough for John Force, they are good enough for me. I believe most racers use 2 mufflers. This is good if they use FM's. If you want a single exhaust system to only flow less that 400cfms use FM. If you feel you need more use another brand. Most racers also use 2) "race mufflers", which FM's do flow more. I understand everyone is very loyal to mufflers, and was just trying to report facts without hype.

Dirtslinger - Do you know any racers that put 10's of thousands into race engines that run through 1) street series Flowmaster muffler? My Dynomax muffler came with a lifetime warranty that includes rust protection. Most high level racers that I have seen using Flowmasters use 2) race series high flow mufflers.
gaudenti - It's so, look at the flow rates yourself at a-1performance.com . All muffler mfgrs measure the flow rates on flow bench, even Flowmaster. Dynomax's cat-back systems are designed and tuned for specific applications on the vehicle on a dyno. I'm relatively sure they know that mufflers emit hot pulses of air. Many pros use every muffler mfgr especially their sponsors. The only reason I mentioned that they are the largest mfgr is because this permits them to have a large R&D multi-dyno facility and to offer a price advantage. You are right that most aftermarket mufflers offer substantial improvements over the stock muffler. High flow rates are probably not quite as important in your case with the 4.2L .
Ren - the factory muffler flows approx. 200cfms, most aftermarket mufflers flow approx. 400-800cfms and will offer a good improvement. With the 2000 5.4 (260HP) engine a good improvement is muffler replacement only or a tuned cat-back system of your choice (flow, sound, materials, cost). Factory and aftermarket cat-back systems for your truck all use at least some forward single exhaust pipe. The 4)pre and reg cats are your most forward restriction and provides adequate backpressure for the engine with the forward 2.5" sections. Even Flowmasters Mustang exhaust uses 2 mufflers and 2) 2.25-2.5" pipes on a 4.6L engine. Borla, Bassani, Edelbrock, Jardine, Flowmaster, and even Dynomax all make wonderful mufflers and systems. This is a open forum for discussion, and I think this is an exemption in most of the automotive industry. Look at all the mfgrs websites, e-mail questions, get brochures, and take your time deciding on improvements based on facts. I told you above that exhaust systems were a controversial subject on this website.
