Gibson SS Dual-Sport
Does anyone have this system installed? How does it sound? I use my truck to commute and also to pull a trailer 10-20 times a year year; so I want the side exit, don't want to lose any torque and would like a low mellow sound . Summit has quoted a price of $476 including delivery. Is this the best price?

I just spent 6 hours Saturday trying to install the Gibson SS Sport truck system (Dual out behind the rear wheel passenger side). If you're a perfectionist, DO NOT BUY THIS SYSTEM UNLESS YOU ARE HAVING IT INSTALLED BY A MUFFLER SHOP. Although all the correct pieces arrived they do not fit together well. First, the diameter of the exhaust pipe ahead of the muffler that connects to the OE pipe is at least 1/16" too large. No matter how you clamp it, it will leak. (This is where you need a muffler shop to expand the OE pipe.) Second the dual pipes behind the muffler cannot be routed without either hitting the upper part of the shock or the spare tire. Neither option is acceptable to me. (Again, if at a muffler shop, the pipes could be bent or welded to accomodate the change needed.) Third, the bolt and nut that connect the flange that keeps the rear two tailpipes together cannot be accessed with normal wrenches. One must either tack weld the nut to the flange or position the nut with a magnet to get the bolt started. Fourth, even after it's all together, the entire assembly has too much flex in it, which I believe is due to the number of u-clamp connections. 8 in total, 2 ahead of the muffler, and 6 behind (three on each pipe).
I do not consider myself to be an expert at these type of installations. (I do not have welding equipment, a cutting torch, tube bender or a lift.) By comparision, several years ago, my 17 year old son put a Borla system on my Bronco in about 2 hours. It fit perfectly, did not leak, had only 3 clamp connections, and did not require any "field adjustments" to the parts. (No, my son couldn't fix this mess either!!!)
I intend to take it to the local custom muffler shop and have then weld all the joints and bend the pipes for a "no-interference" fit. BTW, I don't really know how it sounds until I get rid of the leaks and rattles. Stay Tuned.

Well, it cost another few bucks, but the local muffler/speed shop welded up all the joints and eliminated all the clamps. The clamps weren't stainless so no great loss. The setup looks good with the dual tips; no rattles or interference with the tire or shock; and it even sounds pretty good compared to OE. Performance per G-Tech reflected only a minor 1/10 sec. improvement in 0-60 mph which is probably not really meaningful. (Average of 4 runs on same road at essentially same time & weather conditions.)
