Flowmaster?
If I just install a Flowmaster muffler will it make the exhaust sound better? Should I leave it stock or completely dual it out the back?

Just bought this truck and I love it. I guess I better cause I gave up my classic Mustang for it.
Thinking of several upgrades, Superchip, Tinted windows, bed cover, step(i'm kinda short)

I just went ahead and installed the dual pipes. I love the 2 chamber on my v6, makes it almost sound like a v8.

I installed the Flowmaster 2-Chamber by just cutting out the stock muffler and adding a small section of 2.5" pipe to make up the length diff. Sounds good to me. Some people say the 2-chamber is a little loud, but to me it's between just right and not loud enough.

Yesterday on "Trucks!" they showed a ???vy and they replaced the stock muffler with a resonator and a flowmaster muffler behind it. Are any of you doing this setup or just the muffler. It sounded really mean.
I installed the whole cat-back system. Muffler with 2 tailpipes out the back. The sound is loud but not annoying. It is very aggressive sounding. I love it! If you like the deep throaty exhaust sound you too will love the flowmaster.

ponyfan2, the choice is yours.
I guess it would depend on how much $$ you're willing to spend.
I installed just a Flowmaster 50 series muffler (still have stock tailpipe). The cost was ~$175 CDN, and it definitely sounds better. I think the mileage has improved also.
The pipe behind the muffler ~likely~ won't change the sound too much from stock.
If you have lots of cash, feel free to send me some ;-)

I had a 50 series (two chamber) put in place of stock muffler left all other stock pipes in place sounds good cost around $80. Try that if its not loud enough go back and have the rest done. The shop i went to said they would replace it it or change it at no charge if i wanted it louder of quiter. Mufflers only. I didnt wnat if very loud so i wanted to do it in stages , i am leaving it as is it has a nice rumble no resonating at highway speeds and it definatly gave me more power. It will really smoke the tires from a dead stop now, It has a cap on it that stopped most of the tirs spinning when you put 300lbs over the rear tires. It now puts the truck sidways and spins the tires into second gear. Not a bad mod for 80 bucks.

Hey WOLVRIN 704 how's it going? What series flowmaster did you go with? Do you do any hauling with your truck? Anyone else that has added a flowmaster what is a good series for a 1998 4x4, 4.6? I use the truck to haul a 21 ft boat. Any advice would be appreciated.
Ordered the Flowmaster cat-back system from the online store (#17222). It comes with the 50 series SUV muffler and I will post the results after I get it installed.
Steve g:
Just a clarification, the 50 series is a three chamber, while the 40 series (louder) is a two chamber. There is enough of a difference between the two that Flowmaster will not put a 40 series in a cat-back system. They claim that it produces too much interior resonance (drone), but I would probably buy it if they made it.

I am not sure what one they put on then it sounds good i have no drone but i did not change the rest of the system it isstock not worth the money i have a few friends that have a borla a gibson and a flowmaster i have ridden in all they may make a differance but only a dyno would show it, I got it for the sound the stock system is sick sounding. I noticed a small increase on the bottom end but the sound was my main objective i will have to ask the shop it may be a two chamber single in single out. May be once i get the super chip the whole system would help out more, but with the price of fuel i wont be getting it soon. $1.47 for reg and $1.62 for prem.

Ponyfan2 - Yesterday I had a flowmaster 'deltaflow' 3-chamber installed with 3" tailpipe. It sounds awesome. It cost me a mere $145 and that included a 12" chrome tip. Love it, love it, love it.

I am new at all of this so please bear with me...but does adding an alternative exhaust system such as a Flowmaster effect a manufactures warranty?I have heard that it does but I have also heard that it doesn't.As an afterthought,is it really worth adding to the 4.2???
ponyfan2: I had the exhaust pipes cut just after the dual cats and replaced the stock "y-pipe" with twin pipes and Flowmaster 50 series mufflers and chrome tips running out the back...WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! If you want a bit less noise, you can go with the 70 series. In any case, I recommend this procedure if you have the $$$ (it'll run you around $300). The sound is great, but it's the increase in performance when you unplug the stock exhaust that sold me.
wannabe: As long as you aren't modifying the cats in any way, your warranty will not be affected. Besides, factory mufflers are mostly junk to begin with, so you'll be doing yourself a favor by replacing them!
Good luck!
