I am researching duel exhaust
I have a '97 F150 with a 4.6. My wife wants to buy me duals for my birthday. I have been seeing quite a few people that are happy with the Flowmaster 40. I am new to this and need to know what to look for. I have found a place that custom bends the pipe and installs by welding for around $240 not including the muffler. What size pipe should be used? He says there isn't any room for true duels with two mufflers. Does Flowmaster offer a 2 in/2 out? Where do I purchase my Flowmaster? Is the 40 series going to be too loud for normal driving? Any help would be great.

Michael, Just to let you know, 2 regular oval mufflers will fit. you'll have to install them side ways.
A good muffler shop would know this, take your business elsewhere.
I've had 2 trucks with true duals and yes, they will fit, only they must be setup side ways, unless your putting on glass pacs.
Good Luck......Find a GOOD muffler shop............10-4

If you want the 40 series, I would pay for the Delta series 40. There little if any interior resonance. Not obnoxious either externally.

Micheal, that's what I have, 2 dynomax's (turbos) they cost alot less than Flowmaster and have a limited life time warranty, they are made by Walker muffler, a good long time company.
Ask any of us 60s motor heads, they have a good rep as to making a good muffler. Gm & Mopar used them in the mid 60s and early 70s on their high performance cars.
They have a nice rumble, alot like the Cobra Mustang, but at about 4000 rpms they get loud.......

How about sound of deuls vs single?
How about any torque loss?
I think the idea of true deuls kicks a$$.

OK, now I'm confused. I live in Minnesota and I have been talking with quite a few shops and getting all kinds of different opinions. Most shops say that most people are going with duals off the converter with no mufflers. Now isn't this going to be louder than, say, Flowmaster 40s? They say the 4.6 doesn't make alot of noise. I have heard that having mandrel bent pipes isn't a big deal. It's not a noticable difference. they say if you go mandrel bend and then throw on some mufflers you are creating restrictive flow. Who do you listen to? Now, I am looking for a quality, clean system that isn't terribly, wake up the neighbors loud. I would like that Mustang sound and any performace gains possible. The shops around here are ranging from $200-$350, depending on if you go with mufflers. I checked out http://www.neweraexhaust.com/mikespecials.htm. They have a complete kit for $129.95. Has anyone purchased this and are you happy with it? What does it take to install it at home? Help if you can. I want to make the right choice.

I think that mandrel bends don't mean a thing at the RPMs you run on the street. Granted, you do not want to run die formed pipes like some of the replacement manufacturers crank out.
The Flowmaster 40 without a tail pipe is LOUD and obnoxious, not to mention the resonance vibrations. I never really took notice til I had the tailpipe made. The tail pipe also tunes the system. You have to get the sound out from under the bed.
Without a muffler? I'm not a fan of it on a 5.4L. The new cats flow alot better thus the sound carries through them.
Just my 2 cents.

A bit out of the truck arena, but I think the point is valid: I used dynomax super turbos to run a true dual exhaust on a 95 tbird. Sounded mellow but good. Bad thing is they rusted out in only 3 years! I live in MD, so winters (salt application) is not that bad. Go with the heavier steal on the flowmaster. Well worth the $.
Good luck on your mod.

michael, i'm looking at doing to true duals with headers. the guys at the local speed shop are telling me i need to add a pair of hi-flo cats and that the flowmaster mufflers are way too loud. they're trying to sell me hooker mufflers instead. have you done your system yet? a "rice boy" at work showed me a great article on exaust systems in the Dec issue of Sport Compact Car, excelent article, well worth reading. its go me re-thinkig my whole system.
OleFordHead,
Sounds like they don't sell Flowmasters. There is everything from the 70 to 20 series Flowmasters with varying sound levels in and out.
Sport Compact cars are a whole different animal when you speak of exhaust. V8s are V8s.
Hooker, c'mon, they expired in the 70's....

spaceace, this was more about how exaust systems worked, regardless of the application. i scoffed as well when he first brought it in to me. i understand a V8 is a V8 but the same principles apply. i'm not real sure about the hooker muffler either, gonna have to do some research on it. what do you reccomend?
Sorry, I am BIASED. I prefer Flowmaster. I did not see any real gains in performance. My exhaust was already 3"(big for a small V8). The muffler is about 1/3 the length of the factory. Sorta reminds me of a 5800# Mustang Cobra.
Some guys with the Gibson's see a 3 or 5 MPG improvement.
No noise either !?!
