Question FLOWMASTER #70 SERIES

I need some help on ordering a flowmaster
70 series, what is the outlet size 2.25, 2.50 or 3.0 I want to order dual inlet center outlet,I have a 1999-5.4 engine.

Joe,

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but I recently installed a 70 series Flowmaster (530702) which has a 3" inlet and dual 2 1/2" outlets. I paid $80 plus $7 shipping from a mail order company located in Florida. They have great prices, and I received my muffler within a couple of days. Their number is 1-800-276-6399.

Joe,I don't know about the 99 5.4 but the 98 stock system was a single 2 1/2 in and 2 1/2 out. It sounds like you intend to do away with the Y and have dual in and single 3" out. This definitely sound like a muffler shop job.

thanks for the help, i installed flowmaster #70 on my truck i was not to thrilled with the sound its to throate for me, i am trying to find out if i can get a different muffler and still keep duals out the back.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for posting your experience with the flowmaster 70. I was considering just such a move. Now I am not sure. I too don't want to go overboard on the noise thing.

I wonder if going two out the back is not creating a scavenging problem. Too much diameter slows down exhaust pulses and may decrease performance. Maybe it also increases noise. I ran this same setup by a local muffler shop that comes highly recommended and he said two pipes "defeats the purpose". Said the hot setup was a single 3" pipe out the back. Like you joe, I
don't want to be too loud out there. (after all I am a "RISKDR"). I want to increase drivability and get some additional gas mileage. I also have the 99 5.4.

i would really like to hear some intelligent comment on this issue of pipe diameter, etc. and its relationship to real world performance from basically stock trucks. Doing exhaust mods for the sake of making a lot of noise and then losing on the drivability side does not appeal to me. Reading between the lines of what you have written Joe, I think maybe you are looking for something similar. Maybe we can coax a comment from Mike, the superchip guy. HAY MIKEY!

I called flowmaster up today and explained my problm about that it feels like I am losing power on take off and going up hills.He told me it happens sometimes,wish I would have known that before.Anyway he told me to take off the positive side battery terminal for one hour then hook it back up and let the computer memory take over when I start it up.I will be gettig a superchip in the next couple of weeks if I am not happy.
I will keep you posted.As for the throaty sound, now that I have driven it a few days it isn't that bad,at idle you can't tell from stock mufflers. THANK'S

Riskdr, I've been running the 70 series for about 2 months and am pleased with it. I have the 4.6 and do a lot of towing so I didn't want to loose any low end, I stayed with the stock 2.5 " in and out. I have to say that this is the only modification I have made since the superchip that I could actually feel, especially while towing. The 70 is almost as quiet as the stock muffler until the engine is under a load, then you can hear it. Not loud but a kind of powerful sound. I am geting maybe a mile or 1.5 mile per gallon improvement while towing, I haven't made a long empty trip so I don't know what if any improvement I will get there. I did a lot of research before I changed mufflers and felt the 70 series was what I wanted, performance without a lot of noise. From what I read, the 2.5" was plenty big for the 4.6. I think you could go the single in and out 3" on the 5.4 and not loose any low end. If you want a loud muffler, you don't want the 70 series.

Duals look nice but most of the guys who do this end up with rattles and dangling pipes after 2 or 3 years with the "custom" jobs done at most muffler shops.

Another plus on the 70 series is heat removal. It is a big, heavy muffler, welded and made with heavy duty material. The flowmaster literature says it lowers engine compartment temps significantly and that the muffler absorbs a lot of this heat. They higly recommend heat shields where it is installed. If you replace muffler only, the stock heat shields are in the right place.

Excuse this long post, but I hope it makes your decision easier.

Johnny, thanks for the input. It all makes a lot of sense. The info on heat sheilding is
good. I never would have thought of that. I will post results if I do this. It sounds like the way to go for us old farts who don't want to make a lot of racket but want
some performance enhancement.

About the three inch pipe, some of my friends have gone with a 3" in and out flowmaster (not sure what series) and they have a nice rumble at idle and stay with that traditional flowmaster sound through the rpm's. If they romp on it you can HEAR them coming.
One thing I have heard makes a difference is having mandrel bent pipe over the normal crimping style.
I have not performed any exhaust mods, but am looking for the best performance. Sound is not a major concern.

it has been about a week since i installed
flowmaster #70 singel in dual out,if i had to do it all over again i would have installed the forc three by flowmaster it is there quietest,the only difference is you have to by the complete setup not just the muffler and i thought i did all of my homework .i still may just take off my system and go single again with an awsome tip.
i want the power i had when i bought the truck,but i really like the look of dual's out the back.

Well, I ordered my Flowmaster 70 today. I'm going to have the muffler shop install it with 3" inlet (cut into the "Y" and run 3" from there) and 3" pipes with stock exit location (behind rear tire). I called several places around here, and even one in LA -- no one could do it for less than $350. On top of that, Flowmaster is backordered on their 70 series for 6-8 weeks.

Oh well, nothing worthwhile is ever easy (or cheap), right?
