Exhaust Question
I currently have a true dual, glass pack exhaust system on my truck. The problem with it is, I lost torque. I want a LOUD system that retains the torque. Any suggestions?

What size are your pipes going out the rear? I've heard that there can be problems if you go to large.

I just found this posting, I am having trouble getting the daily topics. I think this site is having problems.
conqsoft, getting back to your problem, yes you're losing alot of low end torque with those glass pack mufflers.
Your good with the 2.5 diameter pipes, my suggestion, which is what I am going to do also, is put on a pair of Dynomax mufflers, get the ones with the off set, in other words ,you can"t see straight through the other side, only daylight.
I don"t have any model #s to give you, but they are oval about 20-23" long 2.5 in and 2.5 outlet and each opening will be off set from the middle of the end (oval) and only looking into them you see some day light, they are about 20% cheaper then Flowmaster and i believe sound great, alot between a 50 & 70 series Flowmaster.

Pipes are 2.25", tips are (currently) 2.5". I'm getting 3" or 3.5" tips put on this weekend.
I'll take a look at the Dynomax. Thanks.
So they would fit right in the place of these?:

Also, I REALLY like the sound I have now. Are the Dynomax's LOUD? (Never too loud for me.)

Conqsoft, With that picture, you would have to put the oval (dynomaxs) on their side for that close clearance, it"s the same way i've had my old ones and i'll do that again.
For being a loud muffler, it's hard to match a glass pack, but Dynomax has them that are quite loud.
The guy I use, is really up on loud and good mufflers, also helping to keep low end torque.

I was going to go with the Dynomax per a reputable shops suggestion and true duals, but after much more research, I went with a split rear custom catback and a MAGNAFLOW muffler, which is almost a straight through muffler. It is a heavy cased muffler and dampens a lot of the droning that a straight through would normally have. From all the posts I have read, I compare it to the Flowmaster 40 or 2 chambered muffler. It does have what they call two chambers, but to me it looked like a straight through muffler looking through it.
They went 3" in and 2.5" dual out. Sounds great. My first runs with it tell me I may have more low end torque than before, maybe its just smoother. It seems to accelerate quicker and smoother.
I do have a very slight drone right at about 1800 rpm in each gear as I am upshifting, but on the highway and steady cruising speeds, there is no drone at all. Man o man at wot it is AWESOME!
Highway torque and HP increase is incredible!
I am very happy with my choice.

Hey JustCuz,you wrote in on the topic "TRUE DUALS" and said you were having them installed and the muffler shop didn't put on a "H" pipe. They weren"t needed???
Now your talking about some muffler system that you split into 2 tail pipes????
consqsoft, I think that this combo wouldn't work with your true dual setup.
I wished I had the money that's spent on putting on,taking off exhaust systems,i could probably buy about any mod I wanted or needed..........

conqsoft, i had the same problem on my "non-ford" truck, no back pressure, full headers, no cats, flowmasters, 3" duals with crossover. i cut out the mufflers and ran straight pipe from headers to tips, then replaced tips with supertrapp mufflers with the 10 removeable discs, so now i can make it as loud or quiet as i like and can move the torque band low or high with the discs
Yeah, I know.
I changed my mind about the true duals. I went into detail in another post. Too many people lost too much low end torque with the true duals so I chickened out at the last minute.
Glad I did. I am extremely happy with my choice.

I'd suggest longer glass-packs. They'll tone the sound down a little, but will probably still be louder than any muffler. I've got 30" packs on my Expedition and suffered very little loss. The Superchip more than made up for it though!

true duals won't lose you low end torque, if you do it right.
Keep your same diameter pipe off the cats (usually 2.5") and use a muffler X2 that will hold back pressure at idle and pressure up to 2500 rpm range, that's what i have with my 5.4L and tail pipes that you like.
I don't see how someone can say that he knows or was told that true duals won't give any low end torque, i think someone wanted to sell a high dollar outfit to a novis, when it came to exhaust systems........10-4

Yup. The real "torque loss" culprit is the glass packs - not the dual pipes.
Packs are nothing more than a baffled section of tailpipe wrapped with fiberglass and stuck inside a larger pipe. There isn't much restriction at all- especially if they have been installed backwards!
The place that installed mine tried to talk me out of duals & packs. They wanted to go with a high-flow muffler (which was actually less expensive). But, I insisted on packs and let them choose the length. So they used long ones to help keep pressure up.

I've decided on the Flowmaster 40 Series. 2 of them. To replace my two glasspacks. They'll be installed Monday. $74.95 each, plus $28 for installation.
