Question Too Much?

Okay I know that upgrading your exhaust system can be benifecial(sp?) to Horsepower and to Gas Mileage. There's also a Downside right? Less torque. Well when normal people upgrade thier exhaust they replace the muffler and Maybe add Duals, Right? Today I saw a 99 shovie on the road with not one,not two, not three, but SIX yes SIX exhaust pipes. Three on each side. Whats the deal on this idiot? Talk about no towing power huh? Shovie owners really know their trucks don't they

The "three" exhaust pipes are probably just exhaust tips. The "tri" exhaust tip is about as lame as those chevy ones that are in the shape of a chevy logo.

I agree with Blake, like the bowtie tips it sounds extremely lame.

The key in choosing an exhaust system is matching it to the engine. What matters is flow, or amount of backpressure, whichever you want to call it. Too much flow, or too little back pressure, will hurt low end torque/power because it moves the engine's powerband up in the rpm range. A single 3in exhaust might be great for an engine.....but change that to a dual 3in exhaust and the low end grunt will dissapear completely due to the excessively low backpressure. Likewise, duals with a relatively small pipe might be much better than a single large diameter pipe.
Didn't want to go off on this but just clear up or set down the basic general rules of exhaust systems 101.
Being a GM fan, that SIX tailpipe Chevy almost made me lose my dinner. That must have been disgusting to see....

Question

If this torque-loss issue is significant and is tied to exhaust backpressure, it seems to me that some bright boy or girl might make some cash if they were to develop an exhaust gate that was tied in to the engine's RPMs. For example, when RPMs are low only one 2½" or 3" diamter exhaust pipe is open from the muffler -- when RPMs hit a certain threshold (say, 2500) a second 2½" or 3" exhaust "gate" could open.

I don't know, what do you think? Is this feasible or am I just talking out my @$$ like I normally do? I'm too lazy to try to make a marketable product, if anyone makes one of these and makes $$, send ½ to me c/o F150online.

Talking

I would love to pull up along side a truck with 6 tail pipes. A good rolling laugh always makes me feel better

Well that dont make no sence. Where I come from trucks are made to haul stuff not azz. Why in gods name would you reduce your ability produce low-end torque for a less than 2% h.p. gain - Furthermore, in a truck that already delivers a substantial amount of h.p. Thank you for the info. I, now, am not going to spend the 500 green George Washingtons just for the pleasure of reducing my torque. Isn't torque what pulls / pushes you up hills and turns the wheels when your trucks fenderwells are full of stiff mud.

HELP ! ! ! Am I the only one that sees this.

JHERRON,
Your idea is good but too late. Go to stage.pint.com/clients/nology/home.html and click on products, then look for SHOTGUN T.R.EX and click on the picture. I think you will find it very informative.
Later and God Bless!!!

Wow, that was fast. Those guys at Nology stole my idea, designed the product, got it through R&D and production, and patented it all since I mentioned it on this board yesterday.

Chaplain, thanks for pointing that site out to us. Some cool stuff there...

Now, does it work? Is it worth the ~$300 to have your exhaust backpressure optimally tuned? If anyone has tried the "Shotgun T.R.EX", please let us know your results with it. Of course, my product would have been called the "dantheman" -- named after everybody's favorite-pollution-belching-hole-that-needs-to-be-silenced.

Gotta go, gotta ask the Nology guys for my check for ½.
