cat back or not

What is the advantage of getting a cat back system versus just a muffler.?
Ex.
What is the difference in just putting a magnaflow muffler on and putting on an entire cat back maganflow system.

Is the sound different, hp different, fuel efficiency different or what?

I'm not an exhaust expert by any means, but here's my take on it from owning 3 Mustangs and my Lightning over the past 18 years of having a drivers license:

With a catback, you get a whole, from the factory piece that normally can be bolted on (no welding). It usually comes with nicer tips than your stock ones.

You save some money buying just the mufflers, but normally welding is invloved (sometimes not), and you run a greater risk of exhaust leaks than buying a whole catback. Not all the time, but the potential is there.

I'm going with a new catback for my L this week (Magnaflow). If, for example, you were looking at a pair of mufflers for, lets say, $80 bucks each, thats $160 for the pair. A new catback is around $369 shipped to my door. I'm thinking the extra 200 I spent on catback gives me greater insurance on there being no leaks and some cool looking tips. Yes, you can normally just get the mufflers for a little under half a factory catback, but in my opinion, I'd go with a whole new catback.

Just my .02

i was trying to make this decision too but the fact that people want 200 dollars in my area just to clamp a magnaflow muffler on my truck made the decision for me. Ill save my pennies n just get the catback for 150 more. Ill get one piece i can install myself and a full 304 stainless system instead of the stock crummy 409 system.
