Post Exhaust Questions...

It has come time to replace the exhaust on my 99 F150 4x4 5.4. The current system was on the truck when I bought it used back in 2000 and is not factory. Well I crawled under it to take a look and found something that I have no clue what it is. Mine has a Y pipe from the motor that singles back then Ys again to two tailpipes. On the single pipe going back about halfway there is a clamp holding two secions of pipe together, but the clamp has a bracket welded to it with some type of canister type thing welded to it. hte canister is a little smaller than a pop can but about the same overall in relation to relative proportionate size. It has no wires running to it, and it is sealed on both ends. For the life of me I cannot figure out what the devil this thing is and what purpose it could have. Anyone with any ideas???

Thanks
Chris

It is not a muffler, exhaust does not route through it. It is to the side of the pipe. It is basically a standard pipe clamp with a bracket that is welded to it and this piece runs parallell with the exhaust pipe to the side of it. I have never seen anything like it.

It is a counterbalance weight, Ford uses them to quiet down rattling or vibrating pipes. My truck has one as well. I do not think you need to keep it with aftermarket exhausts unless it rattles.
