I am new to the forum
I have a 2003 f150 black xlt 4.6 v8
I was thinkin about changing the exhaust to two pipes straight out the back because it looks better than the stock exhaust system
I don't want a too agressive sounding muffler like flowmaster 40 series and similar things to that

Which exhaust muffler should i purchase that is not too loud but has a nice mellow sound and also how big of pipes should i get ??

I would appreciate the help

Gisbon makes some great systems, but I have to warn about their dual out rear (split rear, whatever they call it). It does not fit with 17" spare tire. The instructions say to remove it, and others have come on here complaining about that.

If you want a quality DOR cat-back system Magnaflow or Borla are good and fit with the 17" spare. If you want to do your own custom work, I recommend buying the Magnaflow pre-bent tailpipes. They only cost about $80/pair, but are mandreld bent and fit with the spare tire.

 

The Flowmaster 50 series sounds really good. I have a 40 series on my F150 that is really loud. I paid off the F150 last summer and bought a '03 Mustang GT. I installed 50 series on it after hearing them on a friends Stang. They are not as loud as the 40 series, but still sound really good with alot less droan than the 40 series.

 

I want something that isn't as loud and i plan to have them install it... it have 17in tires

 

I was in your same situation...I did not want to create too much noise. I did however want to know that I had a 5.4L V8 working for me.

I had the shop install a Magnaflow #12588 SI/DO. I think this is a fairly large Magnaflow (not their loudest). They used the existing pipe and bent it to fire straight out the back. They then fabricated another pipe to fire out the other side....They then put on 4" SS Tips.


IT IS PERFECT sound...If I had 10 F150s, I would do this exact same thing to all 10 of them, no question, no variation.

Not sure about MPG as I have not filled up yet. No noticable perf gain...could be, but I cannnot tell.
