Smile Welcome LB

I was a new member this past November and the main reason I joined was to find out what could I do with my exhaust to make it sound better.
There are hundreds if not thousands of threads in the search feature of this site on this very subject. Try typing in something like
love my new exhaust
and go for partial matches of those words. It should keep you busy till more responses come in here.....I'm bettin green 98 will have something to say here!
What did I do? Had the muffler cut out and a straight pipe put in. Still exits out the side, the way I like it and I *love* the way it sounds! Still quiet on the inside and all business on the outside!
Again, welcome to your new home and if you're not doing nothing right now, why not check out what's in computer chips

easy, do what i did, cut your muffler out, weld in a Y pipe and run dual tailpipes out the back. Sounds great!

I'm responding based on what I have read, not what I have, so keep that in mind, ok?
If you go duals, go with 2 1/4" pipes. The reduction in back pressure without the muffler is nothing but positive, especially since you already have 4 cats doing a fine job of creating back pressure. Also have read that there very well can be a loss of low end, but not noticable UNLESS you go 2.5" dual all the way back. Same with gas mileage and torque. As far as sound goes, I've heard it's louder with duals out the back, so it should suit what you are looking for!
How much? Varies widely, but my understanding the spare tire can cause some extra time (read $) for the installer, which, based upon his experience, will be passed on to you.
I would just ask around.
Also, a warning...not all states will even LET you go mufferless, no matter how loud or quiet your truck is.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Which flowmaster american thunder kit are you asking about? they make several. The thing you have to look at is the size of your spare tire if your going with a SI/DO setup. Several kits require relocating the spare tire if you have P265/70/R17 tires or larger. I would recomend calling Flowmaster's tech line and talking with them.

get 2 1/2" true duals with 40 series flowmasters and 3" tailpipes, you won't be sorry! make sure you go to someone who does custom work, not just any muffler shop.

I went to the local shop and had true duals (2.5)
put on with no mufflers. I kept it that way about
two days before the crackling and popping drove
me nuts. I went back and had two cheapo glasspacks
put on for about another $40. Sounded freakin' great!

I then deepened up the sound with 12 inch tips. I
drove it like that until I sold it about a year ago. I had
many compliments on how it sounded. And no, I didn't
notice any significant low end loss. I did notice a drop
in gas mileage though!

I forgot to add...this was a 98 4.6 L engine.

i dont think i lost any tq/hp...it does pull a little harder at WOT though. It shouldnt cost any more than 200 to run pipes and tips out back. Does have some interior noise though...youll like it!

LB,

Have you made your choice yet? I had a 97 4.6 that I traded it for my 04 4.6. On my 97 I had a Dynomax muffler welded in, it sounded ok to start, but then it mellowed out. On my '04, I put a si/so magnaflow stainless steel with stainless tip. The muffler is 14256. It sounds really good. I think it would sound a little better had I of gone with the duals, but I'm happy with what I've got. Total cost was $182, that was with install too. Call this guy, he had the best prices I was able to find and believe me I looked and looked.

In preparation for a new muffler & to save a little time/money at the muffler shop, I went ahead & cut mine off right before the muff. Now there's no muffler or tailpipe. I didn't think it would sound like it does; not as loud as I would have expected but a nice rumble, however. I only drove it around the block, but I did notice a drop in low end. If the tailpipe was put back in w/no muff I bet that would make up for some of the loss. Anyway, it sure sounds better than it did; now if I can get time & money to get to the muffler shop.
