Exhaust Pipes Resonate - Any Ideas?
Exhaust Pipes Resonate - Any Ideas?
Hello. I bought a 1996 F-150 5.0L on Halloween. The previous owner installed some sort of fake dual exhaust with no mufflers. After the final "cat" it Y's out into two pipes with no mufflers and goes out the back of the truck under the bumper. I guess they call this straight pipes??
When I am on a flat road under set acceleration, between around 51 - 57 mph, the exhaust will resonate (WOOM, WOOM, WOOM). It is pretty loud and annoying. Is there anythiong that can be done to lessen or eliminate this?
How much is a very high quality stock style replacement exhaust with a muffler? Can you get one that won't rust out?
I sincerely appreciate any ideas.
Thank you,

very happy with my lifetime warrantied stainless steel 3" single catback i got from www.fulllineexhaust.com for $304 shipped- no droning in the cab-phil
So, is stainless steel what kind is needed for it not to rust out? A local muffler shop quoted around $90 for a pipe and muffler. I am guessing that is the most basic of equipment and quality.
Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. How much is a muffler? How much more/less would that be than just getting one muffler and a new pipe that runs behind the right, rear tire as normal?
Thank you again,

it would be cheaper to weld in a pair of quiet mufflers and keep the dual tailpipes rather than replacing the exhaust with the stock style. That would run you pretty high. Get some reccomendations from your muffler shop about what mufflers to get and that wont resonate.
