I know it is illegal, but this is for the matter of debate. On newer trucks, is it bad for the engine or anything else mechanical or electrical if you have straight pipes for exhaust with no muffler? Just wondering. I know some guys with early to mid 90's model pickups with straight pipes for the increased grumble in the exhaust. Just want to know if it is bad for the truck or not. Thanks

 

I don't think it would hurt anything, you might loose some low end torque, but no damage to anything. My brother-in-law ran a 351 CI v8 with only a H-pipe for a couple of years (no mufflers, no cats). It wasn't too loud at idle and cruise, but was very loud when accelerating.

 

98 4.6 stock cats no mufflers with dual tailpipes....

its got a good rumble at idle, a good burbly Ford sound and sounds great when accellerating. I cant wait to get hi flo cats and eliminate those factory cats!!!

 

There is nothing illegae about not having a muffler, unless the result violates noise ordinances. Mufflers have no impact on emissions.

 

I had straights on an old '79 F100 wiht a 302 and it eventually helped burn the valves out. Without enough back-pressure, won't this eventually damage the engine?

 

There is no such thing as backpressure.

As long as you leave your stock cats in place, straight pipes are fine. You will not lose backpressure. I cut out the muffler on my truck and addded daul tailpipes and my trucks barks the tires easier off the line than before. yes there is such a thing as backpressure, but with this setup, youll be fine.
