Magnaflow Powerpack

Last week I called Mike Troyer at Troyer Performance and got a lesson on exauest systems. After a phone call I think the system he told me about makes sence, but I still like my exhaust to exit before the rear tire. The muffler I used was a Flowmaster and I got some pipes bent at a local shop and then I welded it in place. It sounds very good but I want to improve my exhaust system now. The thing that I want to chance now is I have one 4 inch tip this will be changed to dual tips. The new muffler will be a Magnaflow. The thing is what muffler type is si/do oval or XL Powerpack # 14472 or #14473 this muffler is a single in dual out and is 23 inches long. Is there anybody out there that has made a system for a 1998 F-250 LD 5.4 2x2 automatic? or has used a XL Powerpack?

I guess this muffler is not a good idea! Now I will stick with my flowmaster SI/SO muffler.

I don't remember reading anything on here about owners who have tried the XL Powerpack. Looks like a Cherry Bobm to me. It will probably on the loud side. Most people I read about use something like the #14258 or 14278. I recommend changing the stock Y-pipe to a better designed one while you are making changes. Or, just skip it and get a DIDO muffler like the #14468.

I know nothing about the X-PIPE or the Y-PIPE. What will I gain with putting one on? Do you have to use headers with the x and y pipes?

The OEM y-pipe is very restrictive. Our trucks have 4 cats (I think your 98 does, my 99 did), two per cylinder bank. They join right a little before the stock muffler. Pretty easy to spot on 4WD pickup without jacking it up. Anyway, there have been numberous reports of people replacing that with a better design, by using a 90 degree mandrel bent elbow and then a better designed y-pipe, such as Magnaflow or Flowmaster. Here are a couple threads about them.

Thank you ATP for your help and the information is a big help. When I did the exhaust I never noticed the restrative pipes and now when the Flowmaster comes off so will that stock pipe. There is more to the exhaust than I ever realised. The type of exhaust system that i like is the exit before the rear tire with two tips. I saw a lighting with this system and was impressed with the looks and sound. When i did my exhaust system i made a Gipson sport truck exhaust system and knew very little about restriction between the muffler and the cats. My tip turned gold this looks cheap and now i found out that you can purchase tips with two walls and this will keep it from turning gold. The help that i get from everyone saves me money and the end results are better. Thank You!

I meant to explicitly answer your question earlier. No header repalcement to change the y-pipe. Think you already figured that out, though.
