Question replacement cat help for newbie

I realize this board is mainly for 97+ F-150's, but perhaps someone can help. Or if someone has a suggestion for another site to look at, that would be appreciated.

My dad has a 96 XL with the 4.9L I6 engine. He had the CEL come on, and it was diagnosed as having a bad cat(s). I think he said he was told there were two or three. Anyways, he was quoted by Ford $900+ for just parts, although he says it's everything from the exhaust manifold back to the muffler. Can just the cats be replaced? It seems a bit extreme to have to replace the whole exhaust just because the cats are bad. He's not interested in performance since this is his work truck, just a more cost-effective alternative.

Thanks much for any help or suggestions.

Chris

factory Ford cats are very expensive. Get some Magna flow cats off of Ebay - theyre +/- 100 dollars per pair. Have an exhaust shop weld them on, and if need be, the rest of the exhaust )exhaust pipe, muffler tailpipe(s) should be less than 200.

900 dollars for an exhaust system is crazy, unless it sucks your ****.
