Gibson singal exhaust?
Gibson singal exhaust?
I want to know how much louder the singal swept side exhaust is for 5.4L from Gibson. If anybody has one and can tell me the difference on the highway and city driving and hard accelleration?
It's better then stock, but still pretty quiet overall. After about a year, it did start to get a little more "rumble" to it. After the second year it developed a rattle noise due to a loose baffle......
Decided not to deal with the warranty or Gibson again, so just replaced it with one of these.....

I kept the 3" Gibson tailpipe. It's not loud, but has a nice rumble to it and you can 'hear' it in the cab, but it's not a drone. The wife doesn't complain, so it can't be that bad!
I feel it helped my low end a whole lot more then the Gibson did too. I tow a lot and I can tell a difference between the two and the Flo Pro wins hands down.
Good luck!

For Mitch...
My truck developed a rattle and it sounds like it is reverberating against the bottom of the cab toward the passenger side. I too have the Gibson single. This rattle is only heard when the engine is at 800-1000 rpm, from a start and when coming to a dead stop...only for about a 2-second duration. My normal idle in drive is 625 rpm. It has me "baffled"...so could it be the baffle in the Gibson muffler? Did your rattle have the same type of noise/duration?
Also, what kind of price to replace with a ProFlo?
Thanks,
Kevin

Area 52, As I recall, mine did it on startup and anytime you rev'd up the engine. Did it when taking off from a stop and at idle when in gear too.
I was able to tell on my own by using a broomstick from the pass side and sticking my head under the truck and revving it up. The guy at the muffler shop went under and confirmed it was from the muffler while I kept revving the engine too.
I don't know what the muffler by itself cost, but the whole job cost $120. He had to add some additional pipe and re-engineered the mounting bracket and got the tailpipe to clear the shock and spare tire better.
If yours seems to be closer up front, it could be the heat shields on the cats.......
Good luck!

Thanks for your reply Mitch...
I inspected the heat shields...seem to be in good order (tapped and wiggle...no movement or sound).
I then looked at the rubber insulators between the frame and the front bed support channel (cross-brace). These are located just ahead of the rear wheels looking in through the front part of the wheel well.
The insulator on the passenger side was halfway out and the one on the driver side was all the way out. I read where someone used a long pry bar or screwdriver to pry between the open the gap to slip the rubber back in, but had a heck of a time getting these all the way in where they needed to be.
Sooo, I used my floor jack and a 2"x2" piece of wood about 15" long...held the wood vertically under the bed support channel and raised the jack under the opposite end of the wood...pumped on the jack about 3 times and it raised the bed up 1/4", which provided ample space to slip the insulator back in place.
I took a test drive and 95% of the noise was gone. I think I need to add about a 1/4" thick piece of rubber on both sides to eliminate the other 5% as I think the stock insulators might be a little too thin.
Needless to say...this was the culprit.
Thanks again for your response and I will check into the ProFlo to help get my low-end loss back caused by that Gibson mini-garbage-can!

hodjie,
The Swept Side is a little louder, but mostly just a nice low rumble. I did not want loud, but a little rumble and a little performance pickup. I am very pleased, especially when I coupled it with an AF1 intake.
