Exhaust system choices

I need advice. I'm trying to improve my mileage on my 2003 KR SCrew. Modifying the exhaust (less back pressure, etc.) seems to be one way. At the same time, I'm trying to keep the noise level in the cab to a minimum. I'm also not trying to eliminate the national debt by myself. Any suggestions would truly be appreciated. TIA.

I have the Gibson swept side and have been very happy. It added about 1.5 to the mileage and the sound is good enough that you hear it but at the same time it doesnt run you out of the truck.

I also think it improved my performance but never had it dyno'd so I dont really know.

I also added a microtuner which I have been VERY happy with. You should really consider a tuner as it also boosted the MPG by about 1-1.5, but it REALLY improved the performance.

I'm going to get the electric fans and pullies next, as this will add approx 2.5 MPG and about 30 rear wheel horsepower.

If I had to do it over I would do it this way:

1. Fans and Pullies
2. Microtuner
3. Exhaust

Hope this helps..

Terry...

Thanks for the feedback. Your choices are definitely in line with some of the other posts I've seen. My Screw is under warantee and I've heard that messing with chips can void it. I'm not sure about the fans. I'll have to pose that question to my dealer. They are replacing my steering wheel and center console because of the leather and I can ask then. They are good people to work with.

Where does your exhaust exit? I'm wondering if aft-end exhaust would be more quiet.

Oh, is it true that the state motto of South Dakota is "Gateway to North Dakota"?

South Dakota is not as bad as it seems. I'm in the Air Force and I wasnt too happy about coming to South Dakota, however I have been surprised.....I live in Rapid City and the weather here is nice. It will get crappy for about a week (snow, cold, etc) and then warm up for about three weeks (it has been 45-60). There is so much to do here if you enjoy the outside.

Back to truck stuff.....I use a supertuner which plugs into the code reader/adaptor under your steering wheel so there is no "chip", but just a software change to the truck computer. Most people return the program to stock, which is very easy to do, if they have to go back to the dealer for any work. Using a supertuner would void the warranty if that is the cause of the problem (which any dealer would say it was) but these tuners have been tested and used by MANY folks and I havent really heard of any engine type issues they have caused. I have been using mine for about 7k miles and I have only had good things to say. Take a look at the aftermarket:computerchips area for more info on this.

As for the fans the same issues about the dealer apply. If the fans cause the problems then they wouldnt fix the issue under warrenty. Electric fans are very reliable and are the standard on most high performance cars/trucks. Also removing the fan on the motor will make it run smoother and get better mileage. I think the fan weighs about ten pounds. Electric fans will also make your AC run cooler with the increased air flow they provide. Mike Troyer at troyerperformance.com can help you with both the fans and tuner.

My exhaust exits at the stock location, behind the rear passenger wheel. I have been very happy with it. I didnt want to go with a rear exit system as I will tow a trailer sometimes.

Hope this helps..

Terry...

Just kidding about South Dakota. Every once and a while someone will email me a list of funny 'state mottos'. My all time favorite is for West Virginia: "Sounds better than South Ohio".

Anyway, thanks again for the input. I'll need to do more homework!
