Short story:

Bought truck used and came with a flowmaster exhaust. About a week ago one of the hangers for the tips broke. Then the other, and then the hanger on the muffler.

Have to order a muffler system quick and decided to rip out flowmaster system and run muffler-less for a bit. Not only was the whole flowmaster (muffler/pipes/tips) rusted to hell, but the muffler seemed to hold lots of.... well...... exhaust crap. I think dirt gets caught in their "break through baffles".

Not only do I have a few solid piles of dirt/soot in my driveway and garage, but there is clearly much more still in the muffler.

But without muffler, even though it's a bit too loud at low rpm's, is amazing. I have driven my truck every day for over 2 years and I know how it acts. It used to act tepid at high rpm's, now it acts like it should. I'm going for a magnaflow and x pipe setup.

Bottom line: Flowmaster can suck on my....... uh....... new exhaust pipes! Or something.

 

Despite their good marketing, Flowmaster doesn't have much going for it. Great choice on the Magnaflow products. You'll love them!

hmm, flowmaster makes awesome exhaust systems. i have had them on my mustangs for years. after 100,000 miles and only around 13 years on my stang, i had to finally get a new pair of mufflers. at that point they did rust out.



i remind you that you bought your truck used with the exhaust system on it. and how long was it on the truck?

i have, and many of my mustang brethren can atest to flowmasters awesome track record for quality and hp....

 

HI!... I've been telling people on here for a few years now not to waste your money on crappy FLOWMASTER AKA (rustmaster) mufflers. I had a pair on my truck for 2 years. I had nothing but problems with them. Constantly rusting and splitting. I was always having them welded up. This has happened to several vehicles that I have owned using the FLOWS. I'll never buy any of their cheaply made crap again. FLOWMASTER markets their sound but the muffler it'self doesn't flow all that good. Dyno testing on these trucks has actually proven a loss 90% of the time after installing them. Good choice with the MAGNAFLOW's. I'm running mufflers, "X" pipe, high flow cats, and tips from MAGNAFLOW for 2 years now with no problems and everything still looks almost new and up here we are not afraid to use the SALT in the WINTER. Make sure you get the stainless steel MAGNAFLOW's.

hmmm, you are really chapped about the flows man. in my mustang, and everybody else that has put them on a mustang, they gain hp and tq and gas mileage. but, that was on a mustang, not a 150...... but why would a less restrictive exhaust rob hp? show me proof that flowmasters take away hp and tq from stock readings and i will eat my words. (dyno sheets only, back to back, word of mouth is nothing )

as far as the rust, my car is a summer only car (drop top 5.0 mustangs are crap in winter, especially with wide tires and 3.73s in back!) so you may be onto something there.

the one thing i have against magnaflows is that they are way more expensive than other brands. but i heard a system on a 4.6 mustang and it souded great.

 

HI!... Do a SEARCH on the LIGHTNING forum. They have proven it again and again. My buddy has a PRO STREET MOPAR and he ran a complete 3 inch FLOWMASTER (2 chamber) set up on his car. He ran 13.89E.T. He removed the FLOWMASTER mufflers and ran a 13.17E.T with open exhaust. He then scrapped the FLOWS and installed two 3 inch MAGNAFLOWS and ran consistant 13.27's. With no other changes to his car he knocked off 0.62 seconds off his E.T by getting rid of the FLOWS.

it is great that competition exists. hell years ago you had a choice of glass packs or flows, now there are many choices.....but i think i will get a gibson exhaust for my new f150 when i get it. my buddy with the dakota with gibson exhaust has had no problems whatsoever on his truck, and he runs it all year round (even in the salt). plus jcwhitney sells gibsons cheap

 

Horkn let us know what the Gibson sound like when you put them on. I have been debating on which to go with. The magnaflows seem to be the hot ticket though and more than once I have read that those are the way to go. Also I read Neal's
thread and here about the way his truck take out al the stangs so I might have to go with the Magnaflows. Hey neal when can

well, i doubt a mustang v8 will get taken by a truck that runs high 14's . but that is another topic.

i might go with magnaflows too, if i can get them cheap enough... that thread re full line perf or whtever seems to have magnaflows cheap enough....

HI!... JDaddy : The MUSTANG GT's are easy prey. I'm currently working on a new built 5.4 that should give the CAMARO LSI's a good run in N/A trim. The LTI's are a good match but I usually win. Unless the GT's are severely modded I usually win by a few truck lengths. It really pisses them off when a 4600LB N/A truck yanks them 2-3 truck lengths out of the hole.

 

Have to agree on flows ...Go with what everyone else does ..Magna's...Or you might want to try Spintech's...I have them and absolutely love them !!! Not many people have them so your not going to find much info on them...Spintech is the third exhaust (including Flows) I've had on my truck ,And I like it the best...Good luck!

 

Horkn I am in Watertown just moved out there. Taking the truck up to my cabin in Minocqua this weekend to get it in the snow see what she can do.
