Question Hi-Flow Cats not Legal???

Well, I must admit, I'm a little peeved. I got off the phone with a muffler shop around here in northern California, and was told that there was NO way I can get hi-flow cats because, according to him, there are none that are legal! At least not yet for my 03 F-150 5.4. I was really hoping to add these when I get my exhaust, but he kind of "killed" my idea. Is this true? I know that DRK-NYT SCREW, you got yours off Ebay...the Carsound (Magnaflow) ones. Those were the ones I was gunning for. Why wouldn't these be legal in Cali? I mean, as long as they pass a test, aren't they "legal." I was under the assumption that they WOULD pass the smog. So, what's a guy to do???

Thanks for any help/advice...

So you think it's just this muffler shop giving me the old "crap" routine? I hope you're right, because I really want to add these to my truck. I wrote Mike Troyer about this, but haven't heard back yet. Out of curiousity...where are you from? Did you have any problems finding people to put yours on? Thanks for the tip...I may just have to look around to find someone that'll do it.

The only "legality" about cats is that you can only replace them when they fail or get punctured from road debrie....Eastwing makes a nice 22 Oz. 'road debrie'

hes right in a sense. You are not legally allowed to change your cats for something like 5 years unless they are damaged.

Ive heard that getting your truck nice and hot and then a direct shot to the cats with a supersoaker full of ice water shatters the insides but ive never tried.

or if you just happen *wink wink* to damage them when you are driving on the road, you can replace them. i mean, if you went to put on your new exhaust kit and saw that the cats were punctured, of course you'd have to replace them. they sell lots of good road debris at home depot and ace hardware, but you didn't hear that from me...

Im from Fulton Missouri but i goto school in Warrensburg (CMSU)
Im pretty sure the guy was giving you crap about not wanting to do the job but im sure there is an exhaust shop that is willing to replace your cats. Im getting ready to order some hi-flo's for my 98 4.6 and then run true duals back to my exhisting straight pipes. That will sound good!!

Cool link

Hey,

Thanks for the cool link. It pretty much states it clearly...so, unless anything "damaged" my cats, it looks like I may have to wait. Now, if I CAN get a place to do it, that'd work just fine for me. So, I'll keep searching, and see what I can see/find. Thanks for the useful advice guys...I won't give up until I've "exhausted" all my resources...Come on, that was funny

It's late...

Everyones pretty much right. The guy in the muffler shop is just giving you crap because F-150s have the worst cat setup, and no one wants to touch them, i went through the same thing, and i live in Mass. I just ripped all the cats off, stuck MIL eliminators on it, and love my truck even more now. Yes my cats were also "damaged" by road debris. I think a 10 inch long screwdriver got lodged in one.
